Holden VK 308 gearbox

Hi everyone

Just looking for some advice after doing some research I have decided to replace my gearbox in VK commodore. Currently has the factory 4 speed manual behind the 308, and have decided to go with either a Toyota W58 or Holden T5 5 speed manual. Any pros or cons people have had on these.

Also I'd most likely be supplying the box but would require a mechanic with experience and knowledge in this, based in Christchurch or Canterbury any suggestions would be great.

Thanks in advance.

IMHO the W series Toyota boxs are a bit weak for handling V8 torque, unless its a standard 308 and you don't intend on giving it a hiding it should be ok. The holden World class T5 isn't too bad, but more than likely will be turbo(chev) pattern (vn on) and if your VK is original it will be trimatic pattern. Can obtain adapter plate. Another option would be the Toyota r151, strong, but expensive. If your looking for longer legs for highway cruise look at changing diff ratios, factory V8 early commo came with 3.08 standard ratio, but could be optioned with a 2.6 ratio which gave low rpm cruise
