Overdrive light shouldn't come on unless you push the overdrive off button?

Press the switch on and off a few times and then see if that changes anything. May just be making poor contact due to lack of use.

Just to clarify here for you.
The overdrive light goes on when the overdrive is turned OFF.
(when you look at the light it will say OD OFF)
So the car changing gear etc normally tells me the overdrive is ON.
The way you will be able to tell what is going on is to drive on a straight bit of road at about 70 km/h then push the OD button.
If the engine revs suddenly rise (or thinking about it fall if you already have D off) then the OD function is working and the bulb is likely blown . If they don't then theres something wrong with the OD function. -Might be as simple as what franc is suggesting or might be more serious.
