I uses to use wynns octane boost, in my old escort. It was good as it fixed the lead thing and also boosts the octane so I could you 91 without problems.

When leaded was outlawed I used the ValveMaster (as we were all told) with lousy results. Hard starting, poor power, hungry, fouled plugs, ran on when switched off.
Looked at various substitutes and octane boosters. more expensive than using higher octane fuel. just sumthin else to remember/worry about.
I bought a Fuelstar. Haven't used anything else, no valve recession, gained 4mpg, can (but don't) use 91.
High comp angry 179 for 18 years, now higher comp angry 202.

I used to use valvemaster in my mk 3 zepher until an engine reconditoner told me my car doesn't have taste buds valvemaster is mainly kerosene.so I stopped using it and ran 91 for years also in all falcons I have had with no probs. you can smell the main ingredient in it is kero

Which of course does not mean that there are no active ingredients.

A bit like beer, mainly water.

what about lpg? no lead in that and old valiants holden & falcons used to be good for half a million ks

I suspect anyone that has used unleaded in an old engine in a road car (older than the mid 70??

gsimpson, Aug 5, 5:26pm
In theory the lower octane should be OK but I have found in practice the 91 tends to have carbon build up in the cylinder despite my best efforts while the engines run clean on 98. My Landrover was running on with 91 but this stopped immediately on using 98.

I have had reply back re 2 stroke oil. The recommended rates 20:1 for really old stuff (pre 1930) up to 40:1 for after that.

vcr was and still is a problem with 70,s cars. esp those which rev, Holdens ,fords valiants all suffer badly if driven hard. British stuff no better ,the best answer is hardened seats, although penrite and others market an additive! depends on the mileage and use the car gets as to whats the best answer for you. most cars of that era get little use,now

I've a Yank V8 that I've run for over 30 years so far, I've never added anything to the petrol and so far no sign of valve seat recession. Take that as my experience, your result may vary.

Running 40:1 in a low compression water cooled 4 stroke car engine sounds like a recipe for a carbon fouled disaster area to me!

dave653, Aug 10, 12:32am
I use mine on a daily basis, '76, fresh XU1 spec 202, 95 octane, no additives, no hardened seats, just the Fuelstar. since just after lead was outlawed.

pfemstn, Aug 11, 12:50am
I use a fuel star unit on all my 70,s cars the secret being to put it on before vcr starts, mine have been on since lead was withdrawn, but none do a big mileage.

I have been using regular 2 stroke oil in my big diesel @ 200:1 for ages. No smoke and keeps the injector pump lubricated well, since they took the sulphur out of Diesel. Just remember, car, engine and fuel manufacturers have no interest whatsoever in you getting a long and uneventful life out of your car/light truck engine. They can get anything to run pretty much uneventfully for 100-150,000 K's. When it sh!ts itself its out of warranty and not their problem. Getting your engine to run uneventfully for 500,000 K's is up to you. And thats just around the corner in my truck, running on 200:1 2 stroke oil

Crikey. 200:1 is a bit rich. Yamaha recommend 100:1 for their 2 smoke outboards, and that has to lubricate the pistons and bearings. some Yamaha mechanics have told me the motors can run on 200:1 if your not working them hard.
I have always run my Triton on 1000:1. just to lube the pump and injectors. be interesting to see what others have to say.

Yeah, but remember all those manufacturers of 2 stroke OBM's, motocross and enduro bikes have no interest in your motor lasting a long long time without new piston and rings. They want to gain brownie points from the environmentalists by saying "look at my 2 stroke: it runs on a gazillion to one fully synthetic oil. So please let me continue to make them:)

Pull down a motocross bike that's done 150 hrs on 80:1, vs one thats been running 40:1 BIG difference in bore condition:)
