Caravan Relocation

Can anyone recommend options? We recently purchased a caravan located in Christchurch and want to get it relocated to Taranaki. We have one quote, so far, from a caravan cartage company for $3000! We are prepared to drive down and bring it back but don't have a suitable car to tow it with (caravan will be staying on our lifestyle property). It doesn't seem to be that easy to find rental cars with towing capacity that can be taken on the ferry? Thanks.

Check with Budget rentals in New Plymouth.
I hired a 4x4 ute off them last week with a towbar, and pretty reasonably priced too.
Just ring them for a quote.

Re Budget. . they won't let you take the car on the ferry. https://www.budget.co.nz/en/driving-new-zealand/interisland-travel

What size is the caravan and is it road legal?

maggymay37, Sep 3, 3:01pm
15ft, yes

Could try one of the peer to peer car rental platforms, can filter by towbar.

https://www.mycaryourrental.com/search?city=Christchurch,+New+Zealand Examples (Both unlimited km's): 2007 range rover sport diesel $150/day
2012 Ford Falcon $80 per day.

2010 falcon $70 per day.

Still going to cost you serious coin. Ferry crossings arn't cheap.

thanks s_nz. We didn't know about this option. It'll certainly be cheaper than the only current quote we have for $3000. E-commerce is really putting consumers in the driver's seat.

What is the GVW of the unit? We took a Mitsubishi Outlander with a receiver type towbar from Auckland to Queenstown for Jucy. I think they have a braked towing capacity of 1600kg. If t.he specs fit maybe it would be worth giving them a ring and see what they have that needs to go north. Also maybe try hirepol or Porter Hire - they could have utes .which are hired out to construction type jobs which could fit your needs. I think Budget also have light commercial vehicles ie vans and utes

Also have you tried PTS Logistics? They transport all sorts of vehicles nationwide. Also if you join the NZ motor caravan Assn you get quite a good ferry discount, might not be worth it for a one off trip, but you will need to do the figures for yourself on that.

maggymay37, Sep 3, 5:23pm
The caravan's GVW is about 1300kg

maggymay37, Sep 3, 5:23pm
Yes, have tried PTS. They came back with $3000 quote.

tegretol, Sep 3, 5:42pm
Thanks. Is it road legal? ie WOF'd and registered?

maggymay37, Sep 3, 5:45pm
Yes. WOF'd and registered.

maggymay37, Sep 4, 9:10am
How do we get in touch sw20?

sw20, Sep 4, 10:01am
Check my profile. I'm not a professional vehicle deliverer, I just have the time and the vehicle available in the right place for pickup.

martin11, Sep 4, 10:04am
Check the ferry price and work out your fuel costs !

maggymay37, Sep 4, 10:33am
Shades Trucking - declined to quote for job. They don't do Taranaki.

martin11, Sep 4, 10:54am
What about Jeffs transport ?

trackim, Sep 4, 11:26am
Try Ironfield Transport
He's based out of the Manawatu
