I have been told that tyres are removed from cars when they are imported from Japan. I was also told that these are being sold for approx. $90 each. If the above is the case, how come tyres that are not suitable for imported cars can then be sold to put on cars in NZ?

You have been told wrong . As long as tire is warrantable it can stay on car .

REALLY ? The only reason to take tyres off a car is if they are non compliant. the only possible way a non compliant tyre would sell for $90 is if brand new tyres are over $200 each.--and the tyre is in good nick. What was the person who told you this trying to sell you?

2nd you have been told wrong . People can sell whatever they like as long as there is a sucker wanting it .You come across tyre's on here with the add saying plenty of tread , sidewalls have some cracking . Who would knowingly fit a Tyre that has damage .

Thank you for your replies. Tyre has been offered to a friend for $90 with the above story.

Suggest they've just got story wrong. used tyres come off cars in Japan that are to be scrapped and exporters here loose. Note that many jap imports are sold with winter tyres that are not suitable for normal NZ road use, but are legal. Make sure your friend doesn't buy one as become available when dealer or buyers remove them.

Used tyres are imported for sure. Could be a good deal (or not)
Tyres could be removed from a new import if they weren't a matching set? The tyres are actually OK, but if they turn up with a mismatched set they don't pass a warrant and need a couple of new ones. So there are 2 OK tyres, with 90% tread left on them. Well if it's a $250 SUV tyre, then you might pay $90 for them.

That's 'cause they know that some Rotorua WOF inspectors will pass them. LOL
