Kia Stinger now new Queensland cop car

bazfan, Jul 16, 1:40pm
Interesting to see this happening in Aus. Wonder if NZ police will change too at some point

Cars get "sworn" into the force? Good lord, what if they decline, or can not remember their lines?

thejazzpianoma, Jul 16, 2:48pm
They would probably be stupid enough to waste our money on them here too. I am all for the Stinger for those who want a replacement for the Commodore for personal use. But a stupid over priced, expensive to run and not overly suitable car for Police work. Especially the Sport version the Aussies chose, it's just a toy for the ex school bully type cops to play with. Literally twice the direct running cost that should be budgeted for starters.

Radio is faster than any car. Especially when they have to call off pursuits when the suspect has more bottle than comms does.

We should have been using BMW Diesels years ago. Stupid politicians decided to waste our money on more Holdens because of "Public Perception". Which sums up our Police's priorities in a nutshell really.

3tomany, Jul 16, 3:38pm
I totally agree. BMW drop their pants on these deals, most police forces around the world use them even south africa who are poorer than us. However tall poppy syndrome rules purchasing decisions in our government fleets over cost and practicality.

Dubai Lambos?

tamarillo, Jul 16, 4:33pm
They're for pursuit cars not general policing cars it seems. Other report I saw clearly pointed this out. And 50 is but a fraction of their total needs.
IMO it's an excellent choice for the purpose.
HOlden are too strong a deal here so it's new commodore 2 litres for our forces. All reports say the 2 litre Commodores better than the V6 anyway.

tamarillo, Jul 16, 4:35pm
Surely cost had something to do with it?
Out of interest mate of mine who was with UK traffic and had 5 series diesel there preferred his SV6 he's had here.

s_nz, Jul 16, 5:23pm
It is rumored that whole life costs of the tenders were comparable.

thejazzpianoma, Jul 16, 5:35pm
As explained above and below, cost was on the BMW's side but they were worried the Public would complain even though they made the most economical sense.

Remember road tax is a nil transaction for the Government so Diesel made fantastic sense 15 years ago and still does for the moment now.

Maybe those Kia's make sense as pursuit vehicles somehow in Australia but not here. 4WD should come before that sort of power in New Zealand conditions and realistically that sort of power is not needed anywhere here. Not when there are ultra economical petrols and diesels that are still far quicker than Commodores of just a few years ago.

BTW, I am also highly suspicious that there is some sort of quid pro quo situation going on with the tenders. They always seem to choose much the same unsuitable vehicles.

thejazzpianoma, Jul 16, 5:43pm
I really wish the tenders had to be a matter of public record. Claiming commercial sensitivity shouldn't be allowed when you are spending this sort of public money.

In other news, I am still awaiting the Ombudsman to compel the Police to honour my Official Information Request. The more they try to avoid the law the more I think I might be on to something very interesting/embarrassing.

saxman99, Jul 16, 5:46pm
The bimmers are factory-prepared as police vehicles too which is quite cool.

thejazzpianoma, Jul 16, 5:48pm
Also far more preferable with todays electronics.

thejazzpianoma, Jul 16, 5:55pm
I would have like to have seen the quotes from Skoda too. They had/have such an ideal range of vehicles for NZ conditions and Police requirements. Octavia 4WD's down south with Karoq's for more rural areas.

When they made them I would have issued a lot of city cops with Roomsters. Partly for manoeuvrability, practicality and their enormous internal volume. But also because those massive rear windows in an ugly car would be a wonderful deterrent. Just try and look cool being dragged away in one of those!

Hyundia and Kia have made huge advances in very short time and seem to be right up there with the best now.
