I took my car for a warrant when I was in town (40 mins away) and it failed. I am getting the repairs done at my local garage. My question is do i have to take it back to the original place for the recheck? TIA

No you can pay again elsewhere and get another check done

But if I'm within the 28 days for a free recheck I have to go back to the original place?

Yes, you have to get the recheck done at the same place (unless you pay again for a whole new check, in which case you can do that anywhere anytime but it's a whole new check, not a recheck)
If you got it done at a chain place, eg, VTNZ, you may be able to go to a different branch of that chain. but you need to check with them, they certainly don't have to offer that service (VTNZ do from memory).

tinac- you want a free recheck then it has to go back to the original inspection place. VTNZ and possibly other chain companies are the exception.
