Modern cars are save.

To many gadgets and things to go wrong, after putting it of for ages i,me looking at a fair car, it has a good safety rating and fule economy, but it has an automatic throttle sensor that scares me absolutly s#!Tless, what i will do though it hook up a wire and a switch to short it out so it malfunctions that i can flick back again and practice an emergency stop under unintended acceleration, it has to be done right because you only get one stab on the breaks before it loses vacuum, and then its a painstakeingly slow stop with the engine on the rev limiter, untill you can safely switch it of, folks who have no idea would likely have an accident.

tygertung, Mar 24, 8:05am
The brakes should be able to overpower the engine.

gph1961, Mar 24, 8:25am
good grief!

gunna-1, Mar 24, 9:45am
If you pump the breaks you loose break booster suction from the manifold at full throttle and it dosent work no break booster, then things get hairy.

tygertung, Mar 24, 10:05am
Don't bother pumping them, just use them straight off. Also if you turn the key one stop to acc the steering lock shouldn't engage, it is a bit risky though in case you turn it too far. Or just put the gearbox in neutral. The engine will rev a bit, but at least you won't crash. Shouldn't take too long to come to a stop and then you can turn off the key.

Irrelevant to the actual clip that was presented if you check and do your research for that PARTICULAR chassis.

intrade, Mar 24, 10:40am
this is spot on. i dont know where people get the idea of pumping brakes. the only reason you would do this is if the pedal went to the floor . and that only happens if a line burst or your boiled your brake fluid that is now mostly water.
the day this was recommended was on cars with no brake booster assist till mid 1950 by late 60s all cars mostly had a air-differential booster called vaccuum a vacuum does not exist on planet earth its a difference in pressure only.

bumfacingdown, Mar 24, 10:51am
But you would agree with the other clips that show modern cars are more protective than old cars especially if you ignore that PARTICULAR chassis?

intrade, Mar 24, 10:59am
the problem is while the cars are safe-er . They do mimic a save environment and mask the real danger making drivers more and more complacent to no longer pay attention and the end result if it does go wrong is more disastrous afterwards.

apollo11, Mar 24, 11:05am
So we don't need better cars, just better drivers.

tygertung, Mar 24, 12:19pm
Where do we get those from?

cattleshed, Mar 24, 12:26pm
That is for another conversation as there are so many factors. But the video for this thread is totally false whether intentionally or not. However given who is behind it I struggle to think it is unintentional! My concern is to address that and that alone. Now old v modern, sure but this isn't the thread for that in my opinion.

gunna-1, Mar 24, 1:49pm
The problem is when you pannic it would be easy to lift your foot of the break if you didnt have anywhere immediate to pull over, the first thing is to put it in neutral, before you use the break, dont panic and coast it on the rev limiter until the car is stopped on the side of the road, if you switch the engine of, you loose the break boster, or if you panic and you lock the steering you loose the breaks and the steering, if you were ready for it you could shut it of one click on the ignition and use the emergency break with the front, but you couldent be in a panic to pull it of, the first reaction would be to break while the car is still in drive, this is a fatal mistake, any novice would be dead meat if it happened to them.

gph1961, Mar 24, 5:06pm
give it a bone

apollo11, Mar 24, 5:20pm
Apparently not from China.

tygertung, Mar 24, 8:09pm
I've driven in SE Asia. The driving standards are much higher there, but the roads work differently to here. Over there it is the "river" system where everyone just merges. It is much more efficient. Over there, if anything happens, just merge. Everyone is relaxed.

Over here, it is the jam on the brakes system. Any time anything happens everyone just jams on the brakes. It is very stop start and all the drivers are angry and aggressive.

apollo11, Mar 24, 8:22pm
Corruption is bad in China. People often pay others to sit their driving tests for them.

intrade, Mar 24, 8:27pm
correct for china watch adv china serpentza and NTD news
india driving test is also not to crash for 10 meter and your done.

framtech, Mar 24, 8:58pm
At the end of the day, the car is the ambo at the bottom of the cliff.
If any money was to be spent, it should be on four lane separated highways, fly overs, properly constructed road surfaces and constructive policing of our roads (driver behavior especially truck drivers)
I would make it mandatory for professional trucks to have front, rear and driver cameras fitted and monitored GPS systems. I have witnessed over the last couple of months some incidents that could only be called near manslaughter misses where trucks have pulled out on passing lanes and forced passing cars into oncoming traffic. talk about near misses and all fault of dangerous truck drivers in control of powerful large truck and trailer units that are speeding. I even heard a truck driver saying," f**k car drivers, I only give way to harleys" and yet these bastards are not being caught by unmarked police units. you don't need crumple zones in cars, if you don't get put into life or death situations.

tygertung, Mar 25, 8:13am
In SE Asia the truck drivers are not aggressive and are careful around the other road users.

differentthings, Mar 25, 9:33am
I was just pointing out the fact that modern cars are safer than older cars in a crash regardless of what model/make the old cars are.

bill-robinson, Mar 25, 9:39am
I have no intention of testing your, or any other specialists crash tests.

differentthings, Mar 26, 1:18pm
You don't get to choose when you have a crash in a car.

ronaldo8, Aug 29, 2:48pm
Dissipated? where to? into the aether?

The word you failed to select correctly was "absorbed".
This isn't about dissipation at all.

As in the sentence "the energy was absorbed by the crumple zones"
Which is to say that the mechanical energy in the linear acceleration of the masses of both vehicles was transformed into the compressive, shearing and bending forces used in deforming them"

The point being that those forces are not passed onto the occupants, unlike in an old car where they are, resulting in internal organs ruptureing etc as you end up smeared across a hard dash, highly effective at transmitting energy rather than absorbing it.

By all means jump into a swimming pool filled with feathers and then one filled with steel plate for a practical demonstration.

A matter of physics, not psychics
