Subaru changed from belt driven to chain cams in 2012 and that would be a main reason I personally would look for a later model. It can be really expensive to change the belt ($2000+). But overall they are a solid reliable vehicle but you would absolutely need to get a pre purchase inspection. Good luck with it.

I have a 2010 Outback with chain. Agree with everything else, especially the inspection.

I was specifically referring to the Legacy. Quote: 2010 Subaru Legacy - Timing Belt Or Chain? All 2010 Subaru Legacy engines have a timing belt and are interference. 25/11/2020

So legacy uses belt and outback chain? Thought outback was just a legacy on stilts! They used different engines? So where’s the sweet spot of having chains but the 5 speed auto before cvt?

But even such a long chain might wear out and require replacing as well?

5th gen six cylinder was chain and regular auto. 6th gen is all CVTs.

Back in 2010-2013 that was the case. Legacy was discontinued in 2020. All Subaru current engines are chain driven except for WRX STI which still uses a belt.

No it wasn't, the Legacy and Outback both switched to the new FB25 engine in 2012.
