That is going to result in a very long wait with no result

aprilguy, Jun 10, 1:36pm
Thanks again everyone. The insurer has accepted the cheaper quote and says my car is suddenly economic to repair. However, as others have suggested on here, I probly should have taken the $2k when it was offered as I bought a `new' car tonight. I'm looking forward to having 2 cars for a while, one to use while I work on the other. New car is a 2006 corolla wagon with far less than 330,000 km.

kazbanz, Jun 10, 1:40pm
CVT or standard auto?

aprilguy, Jun 10, 1:40pm
Gazzat22, by coincidence it is the same insurer covering my 3rd party.

aprilguy, Jun 10, 1:44pm
Kazbanz it's a manual. The same model as I test drove the other day in Hamilton but the gearbox in this one is not broken. I have grown to like the minimalist bonnet and tailgate struts.

elect70, Jun 10, 6:48pm
Take the 2$G & keep the car . sure to find used rear quarter panel to get welded in by panel beater for cash no need for cert etc .Just make sure insurance co dont wtite it off .

aprilguy, Jun 11, 1:03am
Elect70, I asked for that but it was never offered to me. The insurer said the car was too dangerous to stay on the road. The damage is being fixed, no need for a new panel. I refer you to post #54; insurer now agrees it is economic to repair.

gunna-1, Jun 11, 1:59am
2000$ to repair a dent, just quote the insurance company 500$ for some pannel beating tools, some bog, time, and another 500$ for the bother, dose it need a quarter panel cut or what? seems over the top.

Airbags can cause injury, and there are to many morons watching tv, the roads arnt that dangerous, only tv porn is.

tygertung, Jun 11, 3:17am
No they ARE dangerous, rest assured. There are thousands of people operating heavy machinery at high speed, of course they are dangerous.

cjohnw, Jun 11, 5:57am
Amazed how many people do not understand how insurance works.

lookoutas, Jun 11, 6:02am
You could have helped by posting a photo. Would still like to see one.
Insurance Co's will do a cash settlement and let you keep the car.

gunna-1, Jun 11, 11:14am
I didnt say they wernt i said our roads are not that dangerous, fear porn sells, crashes are not like they were in the 70s with thousands of bikes on the road and drunk drivers comeing home after the 6oclock swirl, i could care less anyway, take me back to the 70s, this era sux.

elect70, Jun 11, 2:03pm

Lookoutas here is a pic: https://trademe.tmcdn.co.nz/photoserver/full/1555871143.jpg What dya reckon? 2k to fix?

trade4us2, Jun 11, 3:46pm
I have assisted at many accidents in our road. Airbags have saved injuries in cars that have been written off.

You don't have to lodge a claim - if you want to get it repaired on the cheap, don't lodge a claim. If you want to lodge a claim, there are multiple factors as to how a vehicle is 'written off', it is not just how much it costs to repair, it is the 'wreck value' as well. If it costs them x amount to repair it vs they can obtain x amount for wreck value, they will write it off, as it is uneconomical to actually repair (whether you think it is or not). You can always get your own independent Pre Accident Valuations, but quite honestly, for the year/make/model of your vehicle, I don't think you will find it is worth much more than that (what you can sell it for). Yes, it is 'worth' more to YOU, because you use it, but that isn't what insurance is about, it is about how much it is WORTH.

And if it is written off by the Insurer and has structural damage, then yes, they SHOULD (legally) de-register it, as it should get a new WOF to ensure it is roadworthy, before re-registering.

aprilguy, Jun 11, 4:32pm
I can't lodge a claim as my car is not insured for damage, only for 3rd party damage. The lady who ran into me lodged a claim with her insurer. And please see post 54 above. The repair is going ahead.

rhys12, Jun 11, 4:32pm
Most companies will make you buy it at auction, or ask you pay the estimated wreck value, to buy back the wreck. They are 'paying out' on the vehicle, so 'own' the wreck. Most companies I know do not let you keep the wreck, unless it is seriously worth nothing and they can't recoop any money. If it has been structurally damaged in anyway, they HAVE to deregister it, to ensure it has been made roadworthy again before going back on the road. Otherwise any Tom, Dick or Harry could do a bang up job on their wreck and put it back on the road, and the Insurance Company would be negligent/liable for allowing it.

I used to sometimes feel nostalgic about the 90s, the decade of the endless summer, as that is when I was growing up, but we can't go back eh?

A guy at work reckoned that the 70s was the decade of the endless summer, but he was older than me. I dare say if there was someone who was of an intermediate age, the 80s would be the decade of the endless summer.

Thats why you would try and cash settle on the repair cost, not get tit written off. Then the Insurance company doesn't own the car. In this case you would try and cash settle for $1500 on the repair cost and keep fll ownership of the car.

budgel, Jun 12, 6:44am
It's funny that you got what you wanted in getting the car repaired, then realised the payout offer was quite reasonable. I hope you get a good price for the car when you sell it. It will be interesting to see what it will fetch.

smallwoods, Jun 12, 6:52am
This, don't roll over for the insurance company or the person who hit you.
If it can be repaired, it's their fault and their bill.

smallwoods, Jun 12, 6:53am
This.
They are still your insurers.
And the others are at fault.

smallwoods, Jun 12, 6:55am
makes sense re the pay out
