When they do a transmission oil change do they suck it out with some kind machine they charged me $220 only took about 20 mins would they just of drained and filled thus not totally getting all the old fluid out.
Think I got taken for a ride.

What sort of car? What sort of fluid? How many litres? Was the filter done too?
Any computer update etc?

I couldn't buy just the fluid for $220.
And time? They do it a lot, they get good at it. Thats where they make their $.

Ask them.

You cannot comment on such things until the details of the invoice and make/model/trans are revealed. Its that simple.

floscey, May 15, 10:10am
They didnt even want touch my FG falcon transmission oil change.

intrade, May 15, 10:13am
20 minutes is almost impossible to change the transmission fluid in that time . Including just drain and fill. It would only be possible if the car has specified flush port quick connectors.
If you drain and fill on sump of a transmission it takes you 20 minutes alone to just make sure the level is correct . The newer the car the more difficult it is with scan tool data needing correct temperature to measure if its full correctly on modern Toyota VW both with aisin transmissions as example

intrade, May 15, 10:23am
This is most probably what you need to do on the falcon also.

you have to wait, start from cold engine-trans and only got about 15 minutes for the target trans temp to check fluid correctly while it runs without a special tool shown in the video

They put auto trans fluid in my mates CVT Skyline 6 years ago.
At first they said "its nothing we've done" when it failed couple of weeks later. When he told me I asked what fluid did they use, he pulled out the invoice and it became apparent the wrong fluid was used.
They paid him out $4k after he pointed that out but he couldnt find another trans so the car was scrapped. Seems like a lot of that was happening a few years ago.

20mins is not sufficient to drain the fluid, and $250 won't cover the all the fluid required to flush and fill.

franc123, May 15, 1:24pm
I know the model and transmission you are referring to there, I would have not taken that vehicle anywhere other than a Nissan agency for that work using the factory approved fluid. I had one of those fail in a customers vehicle and out of interest priced a brand new unit from Japan, it was $30k. No thats not a typo.

rayonline_tm, May 15, 2:55pm
If it is 20mins maybe they just undid the drain nut but they didn't take the pan off and change the filter? Not so with the newer cars, the older ones have a automatic transmission dipstick and thru that you can add the ATF fluid into it.

It depends on what car, even a 20yr old VW they have no ATF dipstick anyway so even if you didn't take the pan off just to fill it back up from the bottom takes quite a while .

stevo2, May 15, 6:32pm
Yep, he was quoted $30k for a trans from Japan as well. A rebuild in NZ was bloody expensive as well. That's why the car got written off.

my kingdom for a trimatic

mrfxit, May 16, 4:21pm
A lot of auto trans don't have a drain nut.
You have to take the pan off or suck it out of the dip stick pipe.
Spose it's possible with an external filter that they could hook up an adapter & power flush it that way.
Some have to use the radiator cooler pipes & adapters in/out on that

LOL,. shudders at the thought!

WE used to call them the "traumatic".

kiwilandchch, May 19, 7:36pm
2008 MAZDA atenza awd 6 speed auto with 2.5 ltr. they didnt give me a work sheet and silly as i am paid cash and didnt think about it till latter in day. I think the just drained and filled as check oil and its still bit brown ish think was total waste money. didnt get proper flush that i thought i was getting for that price. was horny branch in chch

franc123, May 19, 7:53pm
OK, having just looked at the fluid spec for that car it only uses a fairly common type of fluid that is used across several different manufacturers, not the cheapest one but not far off it. I would have expected a flush involving at least 12L of new fluid for that price and yes it should be visually clean clear red/pink colour at the end if it. The method of payment is irrelevant, you are still entitled to an itemised invoice. Not really a good performance I'd have thought.

kiwilandchch, May 24, 12:15pm
rang oil changers they confirmed there was a bung and just drained and filled explains why its still a bit brown contaminated by old trans fluid left behind as wasnt a flush total waste money taking it to an transmission specialist get done right

franc123, May 24, 12:46pm
Good grief. This is what can happen when you deal with unqualified people.

rayonline_tm, May 25, 9:29am
A flush service is quite specific right? A $300 place might just take the pan off and change the filter and put new fluid back in but I don't think it is a flush.

franc123, May 25, 9:59am
That isn't what they got either for their money. That is what is often specified by manufacturers but that isn't much use to you or your transmission. The point of servicing them is that you are getting rid of as much of the old oil as possible.

rayonline_tm, May 25, 4:23pm
Commonly a oil change "service" in the writing details 4 or 5L of engine oil.

franc123, May 25, 4:49pm
? Not relevant.

Torquflite was the king of autos. I wish makers would still use true autos instead of the 'rubber band' ones.
