Most K's without an oil change?

The engine must run Sweet with a constant Buzz to it.

My son bought a car at 250,000K and drove it to 428,000, without doing one.
Motor was fine, no using oil or water, just the rest of the Corrolla needed work - again. Clutch, hoses, suspension etc.

I have been told that Mazda utes have a 10,000km service interval while the Fords with the same motor are 15,000kms. Mechanics notice the difference between utes when driving a freshly serviced Mazda compared to the Fords that have to soldier on.

It may be that this is ancient history given the advances in oil technology, but it must have been 30 or more years ago when I met MG/Jaguar mechanic and racer Sybil Lupp. While chatting about servicing she said do all the lubrication jobs twice as often as it says in the drivers' handbooks, What is in the books is just the absolute minimum requirement. I took that good advice and my Triumph 2000 needed only "rings and bearings" at 199000 miles.

Two 6th series (1999-2002) Honda Accords in the family, NZ new,4 and V6 models, full service histories, engines almost silent and use negligible oil and now at 100000 and 125000 km.
Before buying, I had looked at two 200000 km examples. Oil looked like tar, engines sounded terrible. I walked away!

Did my time at a Toyota dealer in the late 80's, yard took a trade on diesel hilux done about 75,000k sold new by the dealership, which the farmer claimed had never been serviced by anyone since new, hadn't even left the property! Didn't look like the underside was ever cleaned either, many layers of mud and cow crap.
Also had a relative who failed his wof, as the oil filter can had rusted through and it dripped oil o the inspector.
It was RWD sigma wagon, which he used for work, had it 10 yrs plus. It was only looked at 3 times in the whole time he had it, oil filter leak, a second time when the timing belt broke in the drive and third time when the slip was so bad he couldn't reverse out of his almost flat driveway.

A different side of maker's recommendations. My NZ new RAV4 (2005) manual says plugs change at 100K km but my Texas rellie's says 100k miles!

My diesel 2.8 JTD Ducato has a recommended oil change interval of 30,00 km.

Around 50000ks on a Toyota Kluger (Highlander) when I was at a dealer in Perth. Came in smoking badly & had never had an oil change from new. I'll never understand why people are happy to drop tens of thousands of dollars on a new car but won't spend a few dollars to maintain it

Try buying good oil instead of cheap oil, you wil be surprised by the difference.

We had a 95 Honda integra. Hubby would get the oil changed about every 10,000Km approx he wasn't too fussy tho. Anyway we bought it at 50,000 and sold it at 312,000Km. It certainly did not need rings & bearings, it ran beautifully and we would have been perfectly happy to drive it any distance at all. Exceptionally reliable.

There was a big difference between 1970 and 1990s engineering
technology, but I was happy with my Triumph's 199, 000 miles (that's about 322,000 kms) before it needed attention! Many cars of that earlier era had needed major work at much lower mileages.

Even for engines that have had regular servicing intervals the introduction of some of the high tech friction modifiers can loosen carbon deposits in the engine causing problems.
Need to do short service(change oil and filter) after 10-15 hours of operation.
Old engines probably go longer sometimes because they did not have exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) systems, feeding exhaust gases back into the engine.
I remember one tractor that had not been changed for years and had re-refined (used) oil in it according to the owner.

I got the same advice from a Jag specialist mechanic in 1987 when I got a 1971 Triumph 2000 with 100 000miles on it. That was the year that I started servicing cars twice as often as the book says, I service my ute every 6 months/5000km. A filter for the Z24 engine is $9 and I run 15w40 Castrol oil($22/4litres). I am not going to even think of stretching out the service interval to save $31. The service interval is 12 months/10 000km.

Please tell us where you can buy it for that price?

lythande1, Aug 21, 8:45am
Actually no. If your car takes 20w50, then that is what you should use. I bought my 10w40 from Warehouse. Caltex Havoline.

Viscosity is a very small part of deciding the correct oilfield for a piece of machinery.
In fact going up or down a grade due to conditions can be a good thing.
It’s all those other numbers on the label you need to understand to be sure you have the correct oil for your car.

franc123, Aug 21, 9:59am
Not necessarily. In an older worn engine that may be burning oil it might be fine but in a good condition engine going to a lower grade will be beneficial, even if a 20w/50 grade was specified new. I used to service several old Ecotec Holden V6's where that was the case and they were quite happy on 10w/30. It's in your interests to have a more free flowing oil for better wear prevention after startup but also to enhance fuel economy. As long as it doesnt make it smoke or start burning oil (unlikely) or cause a large dropoff in oil pressure at a hot idle, theres no problem.

electromic, Aug 21, 7:52pm
I get it on special at supercheap and the 5l of 5w30 Castrol edge is $47. I only buy it on special and both products come on sale regularly.

pdc1, Aug 22, 8:39am
I’d rather use used oil than some overrated marketed crap like Castrol!
It always astounds me the mess you find when you pull an engine apart that have these fancy marketed oils in them.

electromic, Dec 3, 3:14am
What is wrong with Castrol? I have used it for 33 years in all but 1 of my vehicles. The exception was my skyline, I ran Mobil 1 (possibly another overrated marketed crap) in it from 73 000km until someone stole it at 380 000+km.
