Nah vacuum switched heater control is leaking.might pay to plug it and blank it off so the old diesel still has some vacuum for ya brakes before ya go tiki touring.
[Either that or get rid of the snake hissing under ya dash]

I've had a couple of cars doing it, heck of a weird hissing / trickling sound coming from the evaporator / tx valve when the air con was on. On one (a toyota cynos) I threw a set of a/c gauges on (was on r134a) and pressures looked good, system worked fine, so I didn;t worry about it. Not like the car was new or especially valuable anyhow. Good luck, thats my cool story anyway
