what is problem with them as most cars im looking at have GDI motors and have been told to stay well clear of them

Neo on a Nissan does not necessarily mean direct injection, although Neo-DI does

pre-2000 GDI engines are generally problematic in the sense the inlet manifolds clog up. The 2.4 GDI has issues with coil consumption which compounds with the manifold clogging issue as well. The 1.8 and 2.0 GDI engines are generally good, as are the 3.0 and 3.5 V6 GDI engines. Hyundai and Kia are now selling vehicles with Mitsubishi GDI technology on the 2.4 Theta II engines.
