Registration for Boat Trailer

I have a boat with a trailer that was last registered in March 2008.I was of the belief that I would need to get the registration up to date before the two years passes. But a mate tells me that the 2 yr time lapse doesn't happen for trailers, and that you don't have to catch up unpaid rego fees for trailers. Is this true!
