They always need retightening after five minutes running.

pass the crack pipe paw

mechnificent, Feb 4, 8:43am
Funny that it slipped.

mechnificent, Feb 4, 8:45am
I suppose you don't retighten fanbelts either Zephyr.

andrew241, Feb 4, 8:51am
Dont they have a auto tensioner on the cam belt!

mechnificent, Feb 4, 8:53am
The older ones don't. not sure about the newer ones.

jmma, Feb 4, 8:53am
Never have retighten a cambelt, it didnt slip, I just stuffed up, just being careless I guess
If you retighten it after 5 mins does that mean you have to keep adjusting it, NO

mechnificent, Feb 4, 8:53am
Is that what Zephyr is having his little fit about is it!

mechnificent, Feb 4, 8:55am
Dos it have an auto tensoiner!

If not then you should run it then retighten it. standard practice if you don't want them to skip in a short time.

mechnificent, Feb 4, 8:56am
You said it started and ran fine. then played up after a restart. classic sign of a loosened and skipped belt.
Well a loose belt in the case of the noise.

jmma, Feb 4, 9:01am
No, check post 1 it sounded like noisy tappets from the word go, I admit, I stuffed up, been a mechanic for 35 years, never retightened 1 yet

jmma, Feb 4, 9:02am
Belt definately wasn't loose

dent, Feb 4, 9:04am
It didnt slip you got it a tooth out from the start by the sounds of it.

jmma, Feb 4, 9:05am
Yes, correct, Mr dent, thank you

mechnificent, Feb 4, 9:05am
Ok. So diesel knock then!

I've been a mechanic for er. 40 years next month, and I always retighten them. Just like fanbelts.

jmma, Feb 4, 9:10am
It would be good to know why it made the noise ( like loose tappets and sounded like it was coming from them to) it was cam timing out a tooth, when put right it was instant quiet,

Therein lies the problem

jmma, Feb 4, 9:11am
oh, that explains it, you must be older school than me (o:

mechnificent, Feb 4, 9:32am
What's Zephyr's problem"

mechnificent, Feb 4, 9:36am
Jmma, I have heard cam belts on the 2.4s sound like tappets when they were loose. I've heard it on several makes and models. I've heard fanbelts make a similar noise but lighter.

If it was the timing being out then it must have been diesel knock, which doesn't usualy happen unless the timing is quite a bit out, or the valvves were just clipping the pistons, in which case it should have been only every secong stroke presumably. when the piston wasn't on compression.

jmma, Feb 4, 9:42am
I drove it about 400km with the noise, it didnt change, power seemed normal, when I took it all apart the belt was tight, with cam timing out, maybe a bit of extra pressure on tappets etc, maybe!

2 & 3L's hate being wound backwards

mechnificent, Feb 4, 10:13am
Beats me Jmma.

Me too, just happy now it sounds good, thanks for your input all the same
