1993 Toyota Trueno

My son's car flashed 'check engine' while he was driving, revs dropped down to 0 then went back again to where they had been - he was travelling at 80kms p.h.
He got home no probs, water ok, oil a bit low but ok, has topped it up. He thinks now that the engine is making a funny rattly noise.
Any ideas what this could be!

The knock sensors in these are a common issue.This may be a starting point.Its funny the noises that you "hear" once something has put the condition of your car in the forefront of your mind.

Under the bonnet in the fuse/relay box there is a data link connector for checking error codes etc.
Turn the ignition to the On position.
Using a paperclip or similar, bridge the 2 connectors marked E1 and TE1.
The engine check light will flash.
If it only flashes once every 5 seconds, then there are no errors stored.
Otherwise, half a second between each flash will give you the first number of the error code, then a 1.5 second gap, then the next series of flashes will give you the second part of the code.ie;
2 flashes, 1.5 second gap, then 1 flash gives you an error code of 21.

Actually, would have been quicker to just give you a link rather than typing that all out.lol:
