check engine light means the car has loged a fault code . you have to get the morse code out when its in diagnostic mode to see what number the fault code is.

what are you laughing you should know they morse the code just like subaru and older GM autodata has specific instructions but my monitor is broken and i dont want to waste this much time and effort to swap monitors back and forward to post pictures and all so this myght help explain http://autorepair.about.com/library/ts/obd-i/bl-dtcs-48a.htm

did you check all the fuse panels- my98 caldina did exactly the same thing .was a 20a fuse from memory.and we traced it back to a fuse under the dash- there are 3 different fuse panels that i know of on this model
