Toyota Stereo / TV System In Car

shagged, Feb 19, 8:46pm
I have just bought a toyota caldina (freshly imported from Japan at the start of the week). It has one of those stereo / video systems in is with the built in GPS and reversing camera. I know you can't get the GPS to work here without the correct disc.

What I was wanting to know about was the TV function on the system. If you turn it on you can get channel 2 and i'm not quite sure what the other channels are but the picture is not quite tuned in properly and the sound buzzes. Other channels are just pictures of fuzz but the sound is really clear. Is there a way of tuning it in properly to get a perfect picture and sound! (As in you put a band expander on the radio to get the radio stations.is there something similar for the TV side of things!)

My unit comes up with a message (should I say it permanently displays it on the screen) insert correct map disc. Was also told by the dealer that if you can find the right toyota gps disc then it should work

I don't actually give a shit about the gps as I already have a navman. All I want to know is if you can get the tv function to work properly here.

You can get a NTSC PAL converter

.but don't forget that you are not permitted in NZ to have a TV or video screen playing programmes etc where the driver can see it

Only when the vehicle is moving, my rear DVD goes to the front screen when I stop (and I mean stop, does not need the handbrake)

no the tv won't work here either. the tv stations broadcast TWO signals per channel one for the picture and one for the sound. the difference between the frequency of the Picture and sound are different between here and japan so while you could possibly get a band expander type thing to get it to tune to tv stations.there will be no sound.

having said that.
if you push the tv button twice it may show up as "Video"
if this is the case then you can add some sort of DVD player or media player to your car (NTSC) and it will play.
I added a western digital media player to our car with a hard drive that is loaded with all our music and some movies.it's great.
i pstripped out the nav box under the seat and put it all in there.I hacked the firmware for custom graphics.have a look.

you may be able to buy a 12 volt TV receiver for motor homes that you could output to your screen.
most of the Toyota screens have a handbrake wire and a "speed" wire to switch off the video when driving. I bypassed those with a switch so i can see my music screen while driving
