Sorry those Mercedes are awful.

An E46 BMW would be so much better at a similar price point.

Well you can also get the small BMW's with the Sunroof option. If erika prefers, I would suggest driving both and making your own mind up.

The catch with the BMW is its harder to get the more economical models with the Sunroof and leather but there are some around. Personally I find the Mercedes offers more bang for buck in terms of options etc and suspect depreciation will be better.

But try both, certainly no harm in it whatsoever.

BTW, while I think about it, with regard to the Alfa being up north with the 1.9 JTD engine could be a great move. That motor is super well proven and factory designed to do 250'000km with nothing more than oil/filter changes. You also only have to change the oil every 30'0000km in most of the car applications.

That means servicing for the long term is going to be easy even if you only have a very basic local garage. Parts for the Alfa are cheap to buy and easily available over night from the likes of Italian Auto's, they do a great job of couriering anywhere and because there staff know what they are talking about ordering bits is really easy.

To give you an idea of running costs expect the following cost per 100km for general running about in todays fuel pricing. This includes RUC cost for the Diesels so is a pretty fair comparisson:

2005 BMW 325I$20
Alfa 147 Diesel $13
Mercedes C200 Kompressor Petrol $18.60
Petrol 2.0 VW Golf $15.75
Diesel 2.0 Golf $14.25

Of course those are only a few models, there are some BMW petrols that are a little better on gas for example.

BTW, in terms of relative power. The Golf Petrol, Mercedes C200 and the Diesel Alfa all have very similar performance. The BMW 325i has a bit more umph again than the others.
