Speedo Error and Lease

macpower, Apr 29, 4:03pm
Have quite a few latest hiace vans in my fleet a few which are leased.Speedo error is reading 7km/hr higher at true 50km/hr travel and about 112kmhr at 100km/hr true. Also .this will mean odometer is reading higher than actual distance travelled. Those who lease on 100k lease loose about 10-12k of actual
real distance. Our lease terms in reality asper actual distance travelled is much lower.@00km speedo reading is only about actual 176-180km is this why people say that Hiaces are high km vechiles .

sorry should read 200km reading is probably actual 176-180

You may well find it is only the actual speed reading that is high, have you travelled an accurate known distance and seen if the odometer is also reading high, it may not be.

I bet you'll find the odometer is accurate, save for variances in tyre wear.

All led type speed signs say it is reading high.Other vechiles weown are spot on like our 80 and 100 landcruisers even myy classic cars are close

the odometer and speedometer is fully digital - there is no drive cable to the gauge cluster. A computer takes a pulse reading from the gearbox and calculates the true distance on the odometer, which would be accurate to say 3-5% due to tyre size variances, and then there is a stepper motor which drives the speedometer needle, which may be 5-10% out. The accuracy of the speedo and odometer is not linked together, ie just because your speedo is reading 10% higher doesn't mean that the odometer too is ticking over 10% faster.

The LED speed signs are not particularly accurate!
Put a Garmin/TomTom/Navman navigator in one of your vehicles and make a comparison between its trip computer and the odometer - this will give you a fairly accurate indication.
Toyota speedometers usually read 5-10% high in my experience - the manufacturers always seem to err on the high side - the odometers are usually closer but still not particularly accurate.
Tyre sizes, wear and pressures are the most significant factor in speedometer/odometer accuracies.
If the odometers are used as a basis for charging, get the lease firm to have the odometers calibrated or get them to fit hubodometers - which have to be accurate!

Another & the most accurate & legally acceptable way is to take the vans to someone with a rolling dyno.
That way you will have a certificate to prove the error for each van.
Could probably do a bulk deal with the dyno operators

Can't argue with that result.

Invalid conclusion.

Good advice

As someone else mentioned, pretty much all manufacturers intentionally set speedometers to read anything up to 10km/h higher than your actual speed.

Because there will always be variation due to tyre choice etc they have made the concious decision of the last decade or two to have the speedo read higher than actual speed to avoid possible litigation as a result of speeding fines etc.
