get a r32 gtr

im_andrew, Apr 10, 5:53am
Why! Do you have anything better to add!

chris_051, Apr 10, 6:11am
OP is from Manukau, every knuckle dragging bush ape drives one of these things around there, newly imported on finance at 20% interest (along with turbo Legacys and E46 BMWs). As someone else has mentioned these things will go the way of Turbo Legacys and E36/46 3 series and be worth bugger all in a few years due to the amount being registered on our roads and the undesirables driving/trashing them. 10 grand is A LOT of money for someone her age and income to spend on a car especially when ya don't have the cash in the first place! Maybe some people need to learn the hard way.

ryanm2, Apr 10, 3:23pm
or go for VW Golf Gti.

molly37, Apr 10, 3:30pm
Yes, I agree a very smart car for an image conscience young woman. Its all about looks and not praciticality at her age unfortunately. Many thanks for your opinions and for finding this. I agree with one of the posts, we also live in Manukau (but we are not the dodgy bush ape type), and see so many losers driving alteezas. And Yes she will have to learn the hard way.

molly37, Apr 10, 10:35pm
So I sat and told her about all your well meant advise, the cost of the hideous insurance not to mention the price in petrol etc. Fell on Deaf Ears. I give up. Maybe when she sits and does the figures and sees for herself she may change her tune. Got some quotes for the Alteeza and the Beemer, about $40 more for the Alteeza a week I think it was. Crazy. Maybe time for tough love. No running to me for petrol money, no borrowing my car when hers breaks down and she cant afford this week to fix it. Hmmm. Worse scenario is that its going to take most of her salary.hence stuck at home for a few more years till the bloody thing is paid off, then it will be time for a new one since she has purchased a 11 year old car to start with. argh!

bigracket, Apr 11, 12:07am
Honestly, they are a good car Imho. You could do alot worse. If she really wants one and she can afford it and take responsibility for it why not let her have it!

bigracket, Apr 11, 12:08am
As Kaz says, look for a nice one though. nothing thats been butchered.

321mat, Apr 11, 6:58pm
Altezza for your daughter!

Time to invest in a pre-paid funeral plan for her.

phillip.weston, Apr 11, 7:48pm
they are a good car, especially when they first came out. Now ten years old they are perhaps on the 'above average' region on the scale. Having said that, what else could you buy for $10k which would look as good, be reliable, have good handling out of the box, have great re-sale value etc etc. A 2001 model for $10k isn't that bad, however paying $12-14k for a 98/99 perhaps is a bit ludicris.

I would suggest something like a Mazda6 but for $10k you wouldn't do much better than an ex-lease 2.0 sedan for that budget.

321mat, Apr 11, 9:26pm
Your daughter should learn to drive, AND get some driving experience - ie, miles under her belt, BEFORE she gets in a car that is so quick it could take her life in an instant because of her inexperience

dvince, Apr 11, 9:48pm
LOL what are you on about!
The altezza has a wee (naturally aspirated) 2L 4/6 pot. Lexus came with an optional 3L.
Not fast at all.

kdcentralni, Apr 11, 11:30pm
Love it beautifully said.

tigra, Apr 11, 11:44pm
I think its great at her age (!) that she wants to get a car with image. I'm sure she will just step up to it from whatever she's currently driving without any issues. However maybe Mum you need to take her around a few car yards and look at other makes and models.

vtecintegra, Apr 12, 12:15am
lol

Anyway I'd be looking at the six cylinder as they should be marginally cheaper and are more likely to have had an easy life than the four.Should still be plenty powerful enough.

bigracket, Apr 12, 12:51am
Its a chick car, Who cares!

craig04, Apr 12, 1:19am
WTF!

r15, Apr 12, 1:36am
the odd thing about this thread is the altezza is one of VERY FEW cars that usually passes through the gauntlet of criticism that is this forum.

altezzas in all 4 mechanical configurationsthey come in are a fairly bulletproof, reliable vehicle, with common parts both new and used, reasonable safety, reasonable performance, reasonable economy, and good resale. also they are an easy car to sell due to popularity.they have been a 'car to have' amoungst males and females for the last 10 years, and arent showing any sign of becoming uncool any time soon.

re-selling a 20 year old bmw in a few years time vs a 20 year old toyota in a few years time, both with say 200,000kms - i know which one will be worth more and easier to sell.

also yes it is unfortunate the 'knuckle-draggers' like them, but this rule can be applied to almost any desirable car. the easiest way to not look like one is to actually clean your car, dont cover in dents and scratches, and dont stick a stupid big spolier or annoyingly loud exhaust on it.

r15, Apr 12, 1:40am
3f- the 4000cc petrol 6 cylinder found in late 80's landcruisers! they go bloody well

and ending in SE!back to toyota school i think

franc123, Apr 12, 2:42am
LMAO what are you used to driving, a 4K Starlet!Having driven both the 2.0L straight six and the 4cyl Yamaha thing that looks like an outboard motor under there, I didn't consider that either had exceptional performance for what they were.

alimac1, Apr 12, 2:52am
I have had my Altezza for 4 1/2 years, and done over 100000km in it with no issues. I must be a skanky girl. Oh wait, I'm a 51 year old man. The only isssue I would have from your point of view is that they do need the regular maintenance kept up or things could get expensive, so if she isn't doing it with her current car, the tezza may not be the car for her.

p_rock, Apr 12, 2:58am
Altezzas & Foresters, lol.

wrong2, Apr 12, 3:08am
does it need to be spelled out !

because of the rediculous replys

"people i dont like drive this car, so i dont like the car either"

ct9a, Apr 12, 3:40pm
my folks got a 01 in 2001 with 3k on the speedo payed 53k for it from memory and now has done 280k with no issues
i have 12 altezzas that come to me and all have the same faults

lower ball joints
rear tyre camber wear
hood rod clip broken(from owner trying)
4cyl tps sensors

ginga4lyfe, Apr 12, 9:31pm
a 1999-2004 Mazda Familia sp20 ay be a good option, small safe, and go really well, also not bad on fuel and dont look too bad! and considering other cars on the market, they are priced reasonably well
