Being on one end of the Forgotten Highway - thought I would drop in here that a friend of mine runs a small Biz on that road, and has been told it's just been voted as the No.1 tourist trip in NZ
But that's got nothing to do with OP's OP
I chat to a lot of bikers that have been through there, and they love it.

Buller Gorge is a beaut, Takaka for a quick blip over a hill, Seddon-Kaikoura a'lil busy makes for fun if ya want'a chance the plod, Lewis-Arthurs-Haast Pass primo but my favourite is the good'ol West Coast from Westport to Haast.got'a keep the weight up so the Mrs got plenty of ashes for the spread'n on me favourite stretch.that's my excuse anyways ;)

I like the road from Te Kuiti to New Plymouth, especially through the Awakino Gorge and over Mount Messenger. Fun to do without passengers in the XR6.

Masterton to Castle Point for a quick squirt but I agree with many here who say the best riding/driving starts at Picton and goes South from there.

Darfield to lake tekapo , mint drive. which is the south island inland road.

SH77 - 79 - 8

mazzyz, Feb 24, 4:04pm
Westcoast/Woodcocks Rd for a shorter drive from State Hwy 16 across to Warkworth has some mint twisty bits to navigate. The 'driving' roads are what I really miss about NZ, they have some good roads in Oz but you have to drive a fair way out of the city to find them.

kdcentralni, Feb 24, 4:15pm
True true I'm sure the aussies built the XR6 with that road in mind ideal size and power for it.

Not many mentions of the 'Gentle Annie', Taihape to Napier or vice versa. You have to like corners because they are almost non stop. If you are into speeding then forget it, if you have 100k's or more showing occasionally then you are going for it. The scenery in some parts is as close as you will get to Sth Island scenery in the Nth Island. Make sure you have a 1/2 tank or better of fuel as there is nothing between Napier and Taihape, and you won't walk to the nearest farm for fuel in a hurry neither as there aren't many as they are almost all stations, one of which is Ngamatea which covers an area approx the same size as lake Taupo http://www.ngamatea.co.nz/the driveway to the housing area is 9 k long.

I'll have a hunt thru my piccies and post a couple shortly.

NZs best road is the Desert Road

the_don_61, Feb 24, 7:08pm
Yes for being boring.north side is nice but not a drivers dream.

The route I posted above, is only roads I've found in NZ that 200K+ seams like 50Kph.mint roads, banked corners. pure dream.

Oramahoe Road with a detour via McIntyre Road in the far north,,,Add Whangae Road into the mix if your balls are big enough. back road from State highway 1 to Opua. All dirt with a mix of twisties, straights, farmland and bush. Its used as a special stage for the Northland Rally and never fails to excite.

Aucks. Hamilton SH1

Ch to Oamaru approximately.today may even have passing lanes.

In my day way back it didn't. but went for miles straight.

Great piece of road I reckon is north of Westport all the way to Karamea and on up to the start of the Heaphy Track.
In particular in the area of the Karamea Bluffs.

ema1, Feb 24, 8:43pm
Another road I like is from Westport through the Buller Gorge turn off north at Inangahua go on through Murcheson get to St Arnoud and go down to Blenheim via the Wairau River route to Renwick, then on up to Havelock and go to Picton via the Queen Charlotte route past Anakiwa , twisty windy but brilliant scenery up through there if you take your time.
Going from Motueka then on over the Takaka Hill onto Collingwood then onto Port Puponga at the base of Farewell Spit is a goody too.

ema1, Feb 24, 8:49pm
I like the road that goes up over the Tararuas between Ashurstpast the Te Apiti Wind Farm real twisty stuff there and on down to Woodville , then from Woodville on down to Masterton going through Pahiatua, Manguatanoka ( Tui Beer Town) Ekatahuna and back up to Palmerston North via the Manawatu Gorge makes for a good drive I reckon did that a couple of years ago.

ema1, Feb 24, 8:54pm
Some brilliant roads between Palmerston North and Wanganui and on over to New Plymouth. The Surf Highway drive around Mt Egmont from New Plymouth round past Opunaki on round to Hawera is brilliant too

lyonruge, Feb 24, 9:03pm
Rotoma's

desmodave, Feb 24, 9:10pm
You need to keep a sharp eyeout for revenue gatherers around Murcheson and the Wairau valley .

kdcentralni, Feb 25, 1:35am
Is this just before the vinegar hill turnoff just south of hape.

jmma, Feb 25, 2:39am
In Taihape it self, going north thru town go straight by the clock instead of turning right past the pub (o:

Saddle road ashurst to woodville used to be the best hillclimb in the NI
