What makes stereo speakers distorted?

Yeah check this. also check that your stereo settings arent blasting the bass to high. "loud" etc, or any other bass/sound enhancement functions.

Are they designed to be boxed, or free air! Could be lack of cone control. But yeh. not enough grunt.

The RMS stands for "root mean square"; it an IEEE standard used for rating amplifier outputs (driven into a predetermined load) and for describing the power handling of speakers. ???Music power??? and ???peak music power??? are more of a marketing ploy than a measure of power output or handling capability.

Yes, I know what RMS means. I just get tired of seeing people refer to ratings as 'Watts RMS' as technically this is incorrect. Watts are watts, nothing else.
Measuring an amplifier's output an calculating the RMS value does not equate to 'watts RMS'.
