Whining sound when in 4 low (4x4)

jazzyjack1, Mar 3, 1:55am
Looked at a 4x4 today to buy and when you shift into 4 low range there is a whining noise coming from the transfer case (when you take off, shifting into 4lo no worries), does it just need a flush! In 4 high it is good as gold!

It could be normal. Was it loud or faint!

Take another one of that type of 4 x for a drive and compare.

You could only hear it when you stuck you head out the window and turned the radio off

if not normal could be low fluid levels in diff or wear and tear . knocking in there - now that IS a worry lol like my old rodeo used to hahahaa

knock knock knock knock clunk knock knock clunk whine lol

if its the diffs why is 4 high ok!

skin1235, Mar 3, 5:39am
won't be the diff, or you'd hear it in any gear that gets to that speed
suspect you'd also hear it at the same revs in 4th high too but is being smothered by other noises
you ask "flush" which is normally used when talking automatic boxes
is it manual ( 4th low) or auto (4 low = 4WD LOW) some have 2WD LOW as well

read your first post again, transfer box has an issue in the low range,
what model, make etc, perhaps it is an issue that needs attention, or maybe it is normal and will do another 300k without attention

Are you sure it's not just a matter of simple physics!

As in. While in 4h and 2h, the vehicle is actually moving a lot faster, so any whining noise is drowned out.

As usual only partial information on the vehicle involved.

Sounds like worn gears or low oil level in the transfer case but some 4WD are a bit noisier in low range but no information on whatvehiclewe are discussing makes this a real stab in the dark.

Grangies - no, switched back to 4 high doing 10km/hour no noise.
Steve - sorry mate, 4x4 is a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Quadra drive. Ive looked into those Jeep sites in the US and I think it could be normal!
