What could be the problem?

One of our cars has started playing up, it is automatic and takes a bit to change gears, it can rev up to 4-5k before it changes. Does it sound like the transmission is going! I realize Noone can tell me for sure but an idea of what we might be facing would be good.
It is booked into a mechanic to have a look on monday

I would start by checking the fluid level. Knowing the year, make, model and mileage of the vehicle would help a little bit.

Fluid has been checked and it's fine. It is a 1996 Nissan pulsar and it's done near 200k

Would have to be the usual suspect in these cases, .dodgy flux-capacitor, wouldn't it !

There is a small plastic gear/cog inside the transmission that shears teeth off and causes a fault as you have described. I can't remember the name of the part, it cost me about $100 to replace it through a transmission specialist. Can be replaced without trans removal or even having to drain the sump. a trans place might know what it is called, apparently a common fault. I had no warranty on the repair because I didn't drop the pan and clean out the teeth, but saying that it never gave any more trouble after

yeah, sorry. it is beer-o'clock on a fri. arvo, though, to be fair :o)

the gear your refering to is the gonerner gear. very common on nissan pulsars and primeras. doesnt sound like thats the prob tho. take your car in and hve the trans serviced. new oil and filter. she will be like new again
