1997 2.8 diesel Hiace van. Turn key to start and sometimes I just hear a click. Release key and then try again and it engages the starter motor and goes. What is the problem and the fix please.

Check your battery connections, they must be clean and tight.

^ or the contacts in starter need replacing.

If you get stuck, "tap" the starter body with a hammer or similar (NOT the little solenoid) and it will get you to the garage to have the starter brushes replaced cos they are nearly worn out.

starter contacts,, easy to replace yourself. pull the old knackered ones out, take them and every serial or part number you can find to repco. parts less than $50, Garage will charge$400

VERY unlikely its brushes in those Denso starters, it WILL be the contacts; they??

Hey all. Took 2 auto sparky. Removed starter motor. He replaced contacts. I re-installed s/motor and away sweet as. $56.54 + tip of .46 cents. Thanx.
