Dual car stereo

Is it possible to have two stereo units use the same speakers! The stereo system in car does not play MP3 discs. Want to install a unit just to play MP3 discs. Was thinking of using a multi-pin rotary switch to be able to switch the output wires to the speakers from one unit to the other unit. THANKS

No reason why that wouldn't work, but would the hassle be worth the effort compared to just buying and installing a new head unit, they are getting so cheap these days.

Where do you put the CD in these units!

Intrade has a rather large cigarette lighter plug in mind, rather like a hubcap from a mini hanging out of your dash.

Parents van had this setup. Both head units were connected to the speakers. Using a relay, when head unit 2 was turned on, it would cut the acc power feed to head unit 1.

whynot just put your MP3's on a flash drive. 32g for about 35 bux, and sure as hell beats scratch cd's.

Thank you.got the answer I was hoping for. Will look into fitting a relay.good thinking. I take it that both units wire to speakers. no need for a rotary switch to switch from one unit to the other. Will make installation a lot easier.

Its actually more common than you think, especially with people that want to keep their factory car stereos, theres a number of audio people in auckland which i know do this, they normally fit the new one in the glove box

yeah the parents setup came like it from japan. The van had a factory AM radio, and an aftermarket radio fitted under it which had FM but no AM, I think that was the reason to have 2 in there. yes both units were wired directly to the speakers as only one would ever run at a time anyway
