I have a theory that the cambelt in an automatic car driven without violent acceleration, will last longer than in a car that is revved a lot or often kept in a low gear. Surely the belt wears out depending on the total engine revolutions.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Saab, MG, MAN-B&W all use(d) chains. Strange you don't see professional cyclists using belts on a push-bike. Oops, sorry, went to a pharmaceutical conference and a cycle race broke out.

NEWSFLASH: SAAB has never built an engine of their own they used DKW 2stroke, Ford V4, Triumph slant 4 and from 1990 onwards were a reskinned Opel/Vauxhall.
