I was planning on buying my parents a car last year but it didn't happen - it is now back on the cards for xmas. their current 'beast' is a Mitsi RVR which costs me alot in maintenance and it's a piece of crap that I won't let my kids go in.Just keep a couple of recommendations to start the hunt please!Toyota Yaris!Honda Jazz!etc

A toyota Echo/Vitz,Mazda Demio/2 would be at the top of my list,mazda more so ,slightly better seating ,reliable economical .Honda Fit would also be a good choice but check that gearbox works well.If looking at Toyota Vitzs dont look at the 1000cc models as they are so underpowered.

Taking into account Toyota tax, you should be able to get a 1990 Corolla for 6k, if you talk down the seller.
