Buying a hilux

Its a modified YD and it makes over 250hp and ridiculous amounts of torque and has made it to 230,000kms so far with no issues.I know more about this engine than you ever will. Its a good basic engine and most of the faults show up in the european(sold in uk) engine because they used different material in the main and rod bearings to appease the emissions laws over there. Also most head cracking issues are caused by the egr recirc like on most other diesels. If you remove this problem solved. The only other major issue is the timing chain which isnt that common compared to how many of these are getting around. The ZD's do have a couple of other issues which are simple to fix but can cause some dramas with the engine even I avoid those.

All i said was that the ranger is a liability once they are over 5 years old the guy in the first post is looking at HILUX OVER 5 YEARS OLD.I would buy the Hilux everytime over a ranger of that age.Brand new i would consider the ranger but second hand nope fords just dont stack up.

My point is that the Japanese Ford (ie. Mazda) is a well built vehicle and they are not a liability when they get to 5 years of age. I'd love to hear what is so poorly built about them.70% of vehicles I work on are utes and the only thing we replace are maintenance items, nothing has failed due to poor build quality.

mugenb20b, Dec 16, 8:25am
Good luck to you.

Thats comin from personal experience with fords the motors and gearboxes arent usually the problem its the rest of them the suspension components and electrically they are pretty rubbish.

You realise the first post the guy is asking about hillux's!You other confused individuals are talking about brand new rangers and amoraks thats a big difference to what this guy is after.

well thats what i thought,i sold my diesel pajero, and brought a newer model petrol one,all the info i could find told me it would do 11 litres per 100 km,well the truth is closer to 15 litres per 100,and i`d say thats about right after owning it for 3 years,i think you will allways go further on diesel, and when i brought it,petrol was 1.72 a litre, diesel 1.38,well petrol has gone up 40 odd cents, diesel about 12-15 cents, the reality is most big petrol 4x4`s need about $150 to fill, and about 500 km is about all you are going to get out of it.

You still don't know jack if you think that any of Nissans modern diesels outperform or or outlast the Mazda/Ford offerings, the harsh reality is that they don't. You don't know anything about me or what I know about them. You only have to pull one to bits to realise what a ballsup the design is and why they give problems, there is nothing good OR basic about them. particularly the timing gear, the CR system is also badly designed too.If your ego can stand it feel free to post back when your 2, sorry 150hp engine grenades so we can say we told you so, that is if it doesn't snap itself out of the piss weak chassis its fitted to that also has a nasty habit of cracking up.

See you assume to much mine is not common rail for starters. And mine out performs pretty much any new or old unmodified ute and im perfectly happy with it I know all about everything you've mentioned and it doesnt bother me in the slightest as most of it will never happen. Its obvious you talk alot of crap thats all i need to know about you.

pleased to see you back jazz.

As I am getting a new company Hiace next month I used Toyota's fuel economy figures for the van and factored in rego and RUC costs. I used recommended buy price new even though discounting applies. I looked at trade me and checked out sell prices and after 150,000 km including depreciation, rego, RUC and fuel the petrol would cost $7840 extra. Im happy with that.

matarautrader, Dec 16, 9:42pm
With all this talk about the relative merits of VW versus Toyota I had a quick look at trade me used utes. Its difficult because the Amorak is still new in the market. However it looks as though a Amorak with 30000kms on is priced at $44000, and new it was $70000. Thats $26000 depreciation. A similar Hilux was $50000 and cost $65000 new. Thats only $15000 depreciation.
Its a very small snapshot of prices but it would seem that the "famed Toyota reliability" ( ahem ) means more to buyers on the second hand market than fuel economy, or the extra bells and whistles that some brands do or dont have.

A lot of the chassis , shocks etc are same as 1991 mazda/ford in lastest model.so why not buy a older one .less computer stuff, windup windows.etc.some mazda 91/95ish models look like ford rangers anyway

davidmoore, Dec 18, 7:33pm
thank,s to all ,, and took your advice Jazzthe Ranger option look,s good

romajeto, Dec 18, 8:33pm
Bollocks.if you believed all that. You would be driving an Isuzu. The worlds leading diesel engine manufacturer.

skiff1, Dec 19, 2:04am
do take a couple for a drive, they are bloody good uses and for my part, super reliable. Good luck shopping

chebry, Dec 19, 4:45am
If you really work your ute petrol is a waste of money as you will use lots of it and if you drive around with it unloaded all the time why buy a ute

chebry, Dec 19, 4:54am
The unbreakable Hilux, urban myth I remember when those unbreakable ads first were aired there were 2 snapped in half Hiluxes dumped in our yard victims of the Weipa road and big camping fishing loads. So dont spray the Toyota kool aide at me Ive seen the dead ones

scoobeey, Dec 19, 8:30am
Buy the hilux! dont listen to trolls . Uncle has one the same year and just loves it and good resale too. Good luck op:)

skiff1, Dec 19, 8:35am
not liking hiluxs is a long way from being a troll. Granted every vehicle has good and bad points, and every vehicle will have good and bad examples, there is no denying that Toyota utes are not as competitive as they once were.

thejazzpianoma, Dec 19, 8:43am
Thanks davidmoore, its alway's nice to hear back that the effort taken to help was worthwhile.

Don't forget to test drive the higher output Amarok as well, you can't beat testing things first hand for yourself. Either way though, you are on the right track in my opinion.

Top work on having an open mind and doing the math.
