Colorado common rail diesel fault

To meet increasingly stringent diesel exhaust emissions requirements, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) have introduced common rail fuel injection systems that develop pressures of up to 2000 bar (30,000 psi). In addition, fuel delivery schemes have become more complicated, often involving multiple injections per cycle. Containing higher pressures and allowing for precise metering of fuel requires very tight tolerances within the injector. These changes have made injectors more sensitive to fuel particulate contamination.

Recently, problems caused by internal diesel injector deposits have been widely reported. In this paper, the results of an investigation into the chemical nature and probable sources of these deposits are discussed. Using an array of techniques, internal deposits were analyzed from on a number of sticking injectors from the field and from OEM test stands in North America. In each case, the internal deposits were found to be composed mainly of the sodium salts of alkenyl succinic acids. These salts are insoluble in ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) fuel and can exist as very fine particles that pass through fuel filters, flowing to the rail and injectors. Sodium can enter diesel fuel from a number of sources including refinery salt driers, storage tank water bottoms and seawater used as ship ballast. Alkenyl succinic acids are commonly used as corrosion inhibitors to protect pipelines and other parts of the diesel fuel delivery system. Based on the proposed mechanism, an engine test was developed that reproduces the deposits and injector sticking observed in the field and OEM test stands. This test was used to identify alternate corrosion inhibitor and detergent chemistries that significantly reduce the propensity to build sticking deposits in low clearance areas inside high pressure diesel injectors.

its like russian roulette when you dont use a additive in your diesel fuel like i keep telling since years now before they even made all these reports. Ulsd has so mutch potential to do damage .They fit dlc injectors to reduce sticking injectors on new diesel and thats what i be getting if you ever rebuild injectors but that wont stop potential rust forming , only the additivescan reduce that risk I got almost all additives here now the morreys no smoke diesel seems ok i am testing it currently as a cetan booster

From memory, I think they had a common fault with the EGR valve staying open.

Vacuum leak! on a diesel! never heard of that before.

Pull out the Air flow meter, give it a good spray in specific cleaner, Pull out the boost pressure sensor and do the same, If you still have issues, pull out the egr and give it a good clean,
Still have issues, go see the local holden dealer and get a fuel Quantity relearn done ( can be called a few names) also try and get them to do a forced regen on the DPF if it has one,(this will take a while for a technician to do correctly)

you be surprised even the old c toyotadiesel can runn wierd when you got the right vaccume hose disconnected i guess it is hanging togather with the idle stepperfrom the aircondition that wants to adjust the load up and down to get a vaccume again for the brakes .

gadgit3, Jan 4, 6:36pm
Come on Intrade lol. The vac pump on a Toyota C engine is Alt driven or cam shaft driven. there is only a "no vac" switch in the system and there is no engine managment to control load as both the cam and Alt vac pumps work at full pace all the time.

gadgit3, Jan 4, 6:43pm
But you are right Intrade with needing to check the vac hoses on these later model engines as the ECU needs to know turbo pressure and also needs to control the EGR throttle plate and these systems will affect engine preformance and surge

May well do so - depends on who applies the product!

Wonders on the effects on latex!

Yes later diesels you need to check air intake hoses after the air flow meter, easiest way is with a smoke tester,

intrade, have a read here- i've never heard of flashlube apart from via this messageboard and your username.

ive owned diesels for years, my friends have owned diesels for years, and so have thousands and thousands of others, without spending money on your snake oil.

your almost as bad with your snake lube as jazz is with his vw's / fiats

sure, your a diesel mechanic, but that just means you see all the broken ones

r15, Jan 7, 6:26am
actually there is a switch, and the handbrake light will light up to tell you this is all vehicles i have driven with C engines, and others.

just pump the brake 50times in quick succession at idle

with that said, all it does is turn on the light though

intrade, Jan 8, 2:07am
r15 i found it wierd also it was a non turbo corolla the vaccume had fallen off on the firewall and that made it run rough i reconnected it and it idledsmooth again.also id did have 2 times a injector pump leak the women got rid of it when it started to leak on the main head oringthat cant be replaced without removal of the pump. All my other clients use flashlube and i have not had to do another pump since.
i am no snakoil fan but that is a must with ulsd fuel unless you got plenty money for repairs.

gadgit3, Jan 8, 2:12am
You may want to have a reread of my post. I said the only switch in the system is the "no vac" switch. funny enough it's the same switch you are trying to refur too.

Has anyone had a fault with their colorado! 2009 3.0L td. took it out tonight after sitting for a few days it hunts at light throttle when cold and was puffing out a fair bit of black smoke. Over fuelling! Doesnt last long goes away if you put your foot down and doesnt do it when hot, doesnt do it all the time either.

intrade, Dec 18, 9:03am
id check for vaccume leaks and ,check egralso scan for fault codes
the obvious stuff .

mm12345, Dec 18, 9:05am
Including prayer if it's out of warranty.

prickle304, Dec 18, 9:08am
Was wondering if the suction control valve could be sticking! Its normally open and requires power to close and regulate fuel flow. it's a pilot assembly from understanding. Due to the jet black smoke its getting a heap of fuel somehow

intrade, Dec 18, 9:12am
i guess something is sticking commonrail got loads of stuff you cant easy rule anything out .black smoke is usually faulty mass airflow if it smokes like hell all the time. depending on how it computes the informationof course .

prickle304, Dec 18, 9:15am
It's only once every now and then. more so when it hasnt been driven for a while. Will have to put a scanner on it and see it its logged any codes

intrade, Dec 18, 9:17am
i would also add some flashlube in case its corrosion from ulsd and change the fuelfilter soon. al preventive mesurment before the commonrail pump starts to spit the dummy.

intrade, Dec 18, 9:19am
if there are no codes then it be something mechanical like egr valve sticking or anything else that cant be monitored by the ecu.
you can also buy blackbox that plug to obd2 to log while driving live data to have more of a idea whats going on after.

gadgit3, Dec 18, 11:15am
Hunting and black smoke. I think you are on the right path with the SCV. You need to read the ECU data and check the common rail pressure and target pressure. At idle if the rail pressure cant hold around what the target pressure is and is fluctuating very erraticlythen this would point to a sticking SCV.

skiff1, Dec 18, 2:51pm
Oh flashlube, is there anything you can't do!
My guttering needs cleaning. Flashlube to the rescue!
My kitty is stuck up a tree. Flashlube to the rescue!
Erectile dysfunction! Forget Viagra, flashlube will fix it!

tim41, Dec 18, 5:54pm
used to be wyns edt or chemtech, flash lube must be flasher

intrade, Dec 18, 7:29pm
actuarly there is one more morreys have a diesel additive also and that even suposedly boost cetan rating . so will investigate that when i find some time. to busy right now everyone wants there things fixed befor xmas.
