What air pressure in tyres please

It depends on the Tyre, it'll be written on the side wall in PSI what the general pressure should be.

intrade, Mar 6, 11:59pm
2.2 bar i would guess

intrade, Mar 7, 12:00am
the sidwall usually states the maximum pressure befor they blow out not the pressure they need.

morrisman1, Mar 7, 12:00am
on the side wall is the max pressure of the tyre, not the recommended. The recommended should be printed on your door shut or somewhere like that.

bill-robinson, Mar 7, 12:05am
phone BMW and ask them

metallicafan21, Mar 7, 12:10am
36 psi.

morrisman1, Mar 7, 12:13am
I think you will find that the blowout pressure well over 100 psi.

unbeatabull, Mar 7, 12:16am
36-38PSI

mrfxit, Mar 7, 12:52am
36 for easy driving / 38psi to 40psi.for anything else

On our v6 Galant,
Running 205/50/16's now & they are showing on the borderline of starting to chew shoulders at 36psi (front) on easy driving.

Back tyres are at 34psi & appear to be running fine.

yours are a lower profile so will be even more prone to chewing shoulders & bending rim lips

socram, Mar 7, 12:53am
Different makes/rubber composition generally means a different pressure too.

intrade, Mar 7, 2:04am
31 pounds per square inch = 2.13737476 bar
shel be right

kevymtnz, Mar 7, 2:44am
no less than 10% of the max eg
max 42 = 38psi
for all round firmness

cowlover, Mar 7, 2:54am
Far too low.I'd be setting them at 38 and then adjusting up or down a pound or two dpending on how it feels on the road.

mrfxit, Mar 7, 3:01am
Totally agree .

31psi . HOLY BATMAN thats sinking a bit low.
You WILL bend the rim beads on potholes/ curbs with it at that low AND chew the tyre shoulders out really fast.
HECK, I don't & wouldn't even run the 50 series that low on the back

hatchback, Mar 7, 3:07am
What about 235/45 x 17's on a VP Commie, I thought 32 would have been enough.!

mrfxit, Mar 7, 3:25am
Most big 4cyl / 6's including v6's (fwd AND rwd) need at least 34 psi in the front tyres on 60/65/70 series tyres to minimize excess shoulder wear. why would you think something like a VP Commodore could get away with less psi on a lower profile

mrfxit, Mar 7, 3:26am
Only a couple of psi either way if any

peril787b1, Mar 7, 4:06am
BMW 5 series e39 on 18's is 38 front, 40 rear, so I'd be putting your 3 series at 36/38 or 38/38. What year is the 320i!

hawat, Mar 7, 2:21pm
Agree with peril787b1. Tyre wear and comfort are considerations from having higher pressures. But also the handling improves quite a bit too. Amazing how much better turn in is at 38psi on the fronts compared to 35. I was running at 35 until the tyre people pointed out that I was running my Toyos out too soon. There washeaps of tread left in the middle but the shoulders were all worn. Another thing to watch is that not all garage tyre pressure gauges are accurate.

socram, Mar 7, 2:28pm
Not so.The Toyo's run at about 26lbs for track work.Much lower than whatever I ran on it before.I use to run the (old) Min at about 34, but about 41 for sprints and hillclimbs.

mrfxit, Mar 7, 6:56pm
All of your's are very different situations & none are public road usage.

Still good to know tho.

elect70, Mar 7, 8:25pm
I run proxes 4 on my 328245/40/18rear235/40/ 18front&run them at 40 psiotherwise theshoulderswear

hawat, Mar 7, 10:00pm
I have 235/40 18's all around on a 540. Can you explain what benefit there is from having 245 on the back!

unbeatabull, Mar 7, 11:05pm
If its a RWD car, some people like to have wider tyres on the back for more traction, especially if it is a performance vehicle.

hawat, Mar 8, 12:11am
OK gotcha. I haven't found the 235's wanting but then I use traction control all the time. Turned it off once and made the rears spin but didn't feel that much faster. Young guy in a WRX on the Constellation onramp was impressed tho'
