but power at back of ignition switch when turned is there a fuse for this? if so where would it be on a e25 Nissan caravan?

yes there will be and a relay, probably. What I do is get a good torch and try trace the wire/ right colour back from the starter, or from the ignition forward, try downloading a wiring diagram from the internet. side panels or under seats., behind front seats, it's a guess.
