Toyota Starlet 1994

Had this car for about 3 years and changed oil and filter every 10000k.
Its done 197000 km
Whats the best oil grade and brand to use.
And is the gear box oil separate to engine and when should that be replaced?

At that age and mileage, any well known brand of 15w40 oil will do (Shell, Castrol, etc). Gearbox oil is separate from the engine and the grade I'd use would be 75w90. And, don't forget the cambelt, it could be due soon.

ETA: gearbox oil isn't normally replaced until the clutch goes, but you might as well do it, it will only hold about 2 litres.

What's been used in it up until now?

Valvoline 15w 40 XLD

Toyota specified 5W-30 or 10W-30 for that car. Unless it is burning oil, is noisy or something like that, then use the specified oil. Using a heavier weight oil like 15W/40 will just mean you use more fuel.

That's fine, just keep using it.

By "gearbox", I'd like to think it's a manual.
