Toyota 86 jap version of Porsche

tamarillo, Feb 25, 8:49am
Dealer ad on tm claims the 86 is 'the Japanese version of Porsche'
Now come on! I know advertising is allowed puffery but that's just silly.
Only Porsche of that layout was the old 924, 944 which is long dead.
Truth in advertising.

Well they do both have boxer engines and are RWD.

Too bad they are so bloody slow though.

pandai, Feb 25, 9:20am
Yep, only two car manufacturers putting those engines in production cars.

There are tuners in Australia who make some great supercharger kits for the 86/BRZ. Lots of fun.

tamarillo, Feb 25, 6:24pm
Not enough! In that case an outback is a version too, boxer AWD.

audi_s_ate, Feb 25, 6:28pm
Drive one, they are a ton of fun even with a slow 0-100 time.

bill-robinson, Feb 25, 7:10pm
924 and 944 are not boxer engined
90's, super 90, 911 series are boxer 928 series are v8
you should know this sw20

tamarillo, Feb 25, 7:47pm
Yes I know that thanks, I was referring to layout of engine in front rear wheel drive, 4 cylinder, 2+2.

So basically there isn't a Porsche with layout like the 86.

brapbrap8, Feb 25, 8:18pm
Next thing we know, the Subaru Forester will be advertised as "pretty much a 911 Turbo".
Boxer, turbo, all wheel drive - identical!

bill-robinson, Feb 25, 8:37pm
yes, you are correct.my comment was directed to sw 20 who should know a bit about different cars. the 924/944/928 are front engined with a transaxle which is a bit unique for a road car

tamarillo, Feb 25, 8:53pm
914! That's the one! Both Mid engined (could say 86 is front mid engined, well let's stretch truth a bit) 4 cylinder boxer, rear drive.
Not 2+2, nah it's just not.

You are getting yourself all confuzzled by focussing on trivia instead of substance.

Once upon a time, Porsches were small, lightweight 2-seat sportscars that relied on lightness and chassis balance rather than brutal horsepower for their high performance. They also used to cost less than a house.

In other words, a bit like the Toyota 86, yeah. ?

richardmayes, Feb 25, 9:33pm
I notice the interweb is already full of people re-powering their Toyota 86s with 1UZ-etcs, 2JZ-etcs, and pretty much anything else Toyota with a bit more displacement, though.

bill-robinson, Feb 26, 12:40am
why? just bolt in a turbo ej20 subaru engine in that is what they do for GT racing in europe

sw20, Feb 26, 6:44am
Go to the Porsche showroom and try and buy a 924, 944 or 928.

gammelvind, Feb 26, 8:21am
No not a 911, a 914 maybe but the forester is missing a couple of cylinders.

chook90, Feb 26, 8:59am
Seriously? For goodness sake let's compare apples with apples shall we?

Comparing an '86 to a 924 or 944 and saying one is like the other omits the rather simple detail that one is 30 years newer than the other - thus to suggest it is "the same or a japanese version of" is really a pointless argument.

Compare it to the absolute base model current Boxter and the '86 still gets its arse handed to it on a plate.

Hatz (Porsche exec)mentioned there may be a smaller version of the Porsche Panamera in the planning process. (front engine/ rear drive)
http://www.carscoops.com/2014/12/porsche-exec-denies-firms-work-on-tesla.html Nameless are developing some good bits for the 86. http://youtu.be/vPyNXKY_cB0 (Nameless 86 - us rally)(400hp, holinger 86 out in the Nevada desert) The Middle Eastern 2jz 86's sound a bit rough. Can't wait for a smaller Panamera: how about a 1uz powered 944.

tamarillo, Feb 26, 9:49am
Yes your right, but your no fun!

tamarillo, Feb 26, 9:50am
And out come my pedantic evil twin. 914 had but four cylinders you see, so.

tamarillo, Feb 26, 9:52am
Think you missed the pointy end there, we're not comparing them, we are having a laugh at dealer who did. Irony.

tamarillo, Feb 26, 9:58am
Love this line from first link on Porsche : Hatz explained that they ???are a sports car firm, and that brings with it.
Images of huge diesel SUVs come dripping in irony now! Admit to really liking the look of their new little SUV whatever the heck it's called. something to do with pepper? Just looks good imo.

tamarillo, May 26, 4:01pm
$116,000 and $42,000. Hmmmmmmm.
