My 1974 beetles lights both don't work (bulbs not blown) Wanting to take it in for a wof, But unsure if it will pass due to the reverse lights.

Either both bulbs must work or none I was told. Bit of dodgy wiring, sometimes they work or not, never flagged at wof.

NO, regardless of them being fitted reverse lights are NOT a testable item. HOWEVER. Should they work and NOT switch off when the vehicle is not in reverse that would be a reason for WoF rejection.

Two bulbs? Two lousy bulbs? I get being curious about the legalities of it as a matter of interest, but asking because "Wanting to take it in for a wof, But unsure if it will pass due to the reverse lights" for the sake of two bulbs is developmentally delayed.

Just out of pure curiosity, what's the law regarding the fitment of extra backing lights? Say you had an old spotlight laying around that you figured would be handy to wire up on the back, (into the existing wiring, so as to only operate when reverse is engaged) to give better illumination in really dark areas. can you do that?

Nope. You'd need an extra switch to turn it on. It could only be fitted as an accessory.

Permitted equipment
1. A vehicle is fitted with more than two reversing lamps at the rear of the vehicle.
2. A retrofitted pair of reversing lamps is not:
a) symmetrically mounted, or
b) mounted as far towards each side of the vehicle as is practicable.
Condition
3. A lamp is insecure.
4. A lens is missing, or has a hole, crack or other damage that allows moisture or dirt to enter.
5. A reflector is damaged or has deteriorated so that light output is reduced.
Performance
6. A lamp controlled by gear engagement continues to display a light to the rear when the reverse gear is disengaged.
7. A lamp controlled by a manual switch continues to display a light to the rear while the headlamps are switched on.
8. When engaged, a lamp emits light that is not:
a) substantially white (Note 3), or
b) steady, or
c) diffuse or a dipped beam.
9. Where a lamp comprises an array of light sources (eg LEDs), fewer than 75% of these operate.
Note 1 Definitions
Reversing lamp means a lamp designed to illuminate the area behind the vehicle while it is reversing and to warn other road users that the vehicle is reversing or about to reverse.
Note 2
A reversing lamp that does not comply with equipment, condition and performance requirements must be made to comply or be disabled so that it does not emit a light.
Note 3
Vehicles first registered in New Zealand before 27 February 2005 were allowed to use rear indicator lamps as reversing lamps. Although the light emitted is amber rather than white, this arrangement is still permitted for these vehicles.
Note 4
A vehicle originally manufactured with a reversing lamp arrangement that differs from what is required or permitted in this section may retain the original reversing lamps provided they remain fitted in their original position and perform as intended by the vehicle manufacturer.

Bulbs are not blown, I was just asking a question to know if I should take it in and get a wof, or do i wire up a switch to make the lights manually.

Think it has to be linked with the reverse gear not a manual switch which you could forget to turn off .

Interesting discussion. A number of years ago I worked for Avis Rental Cars. Some of our cars were 1100cc Escorts. They have the same rear lights as the 1300cc Escort, which have built in reverse light lenses. However the 1100cc version has no switch on the gearbox, but does have bulbs in the lenses. Therefore the reverse lights would never work. This never posed a problem with a COF, however, when the vehicle came up for sale and was changed to a WOF, we were told they must work as people behind would expect that they would come on if you reversed. (sort of made sense). However when I pointed out there was no switch, then the Testing Station passed the car, which made the above argument null and void I would think. All very confusing! However my question. Are you sure they are designed to work, as they weren't on the Escort!

I honestly don't know if they are meant to work or not, My husbands beetles don't even have reverse lights, But they are 14+ years older then mine, Might have to do some study on this tonight

Well the polo 2013 gt has only one reversing light from factory new, talk about being cheap and saving a dollar. This is fact.

Been sittin-Back,,,,perusin-as ya do. lol Think the 1302S had them. any decent auto sparky could fit a micro switch-if the original dubbie gearbox has no reverse light switch. But REALITY IS. IT Will NOT fail on reverse lights.
