automatic have lost reverse all other gears are normal anyone have any ideas what could be wrong

Its normal for the Explorer transmissions to give trouble(many were fixed under warranty when new), take it to an Automatic Transmission Reconditioner for advice and cost to rebuild.

Something has fallen off the gear linkage. pull the plastic surround off and have a look.
