Alex is badge engineered runx for different market segment. Apparently they sell through different show rooms in Japan. Hope I have that right, there are experts here who can expand.

Yep they went through different sales channels in Japan just like the earlier Corolla/Sprinter.

Guess my next question would be why bother?--but guess that's the japanese market

Japanese market is huge. So is Toyotas range. Very few dealerships are big enough to hold their range of 50 vehicles and sub variants. Makes perfect sense when you are there.

There are two Toyota chains in Japan-one sold Runx one sold Alex
In NZ we badged the same car Corolla.
Within each product group you then have various grades of vehicle.
Ie different trip spec etc.
It really is that simple.
The thing is guys there are more people in one City in japan than all of NZ

For a while there were no less than five Toyota dealership brands- but they've since pulled it back (during the GFC and the general retrenchment of the Japanese domestic market).
Nissan do a similar thing with Red Stage and Blue Stage.
