Will a special DVD reactivate Jap car radio?

express, Feb 27, 1:07pm
Thats what a dealer is telling me because the battery was disconnected. Sounds like fair dust to me.

a.woodrow, Feb 27, 1:32pm
What is the vehicle? Honda for example have a dvd that can unlock certain features on jap radios, not GPS though

express, Feb 27, 1:43pm
Toyota Fielder.

express, Feb 27, 1:44pm
Oh yeah. Nothing works, just the screen.

bill-robinson, Feb 27, 3:08pm
if it is so easy ,ask the dealer do to it? it is a sales feature

franc123, Feb 27, 3:12pm
Damn right, they should be selling you something that is actually useable, not partially functional, in the wrong language, or not functional at all.

tamarillo, Feb 27, 3:40pm
Oh oh I feel myself hot under that collar! I feel all jsp imports should have electronics converted, the more do it the better the price, parts get bought in bulk etc.
but it's not up to dealers its up to consumers to demand it. We should buy on condition it's done, but we're not so dealer doesn't want to add cost in such a cut throat market.

kazbanz, Feb 27, 4:20pm
Express-the dealer is telling you the truth. You literally install a startup disk which is a CD.You need the correct one for that radio. The dealer should have the disk.
By "the battery was disconnected" you mean -YOU disconnected the battery after sale? Have you checked that your 3 passenger windows work off the master switch? -Bet they don't.
Literally by powering down the car everything has reset to default. With the AFTERMARKET. radio that will be fitted That means you need to run the disk through it again,
OHH --hang on a minute--Im assuming its one of those radios that has the GPS screen--if it isn't then different story
MY advice to you is to bite the bullet and rip the radio out.
Fit a kiwi radio.
You could fit factory Toyota radios mostly or single din radios with a pocket under.
A basic Toyota radio will cost you about $100 -a fancy one will cost $230
"a dealer somewhere" in west Auckland probably has the startup disks if you asked them

kazbanz, Feb 27, 4:20pm
Great idea dude. so who pays?
Not being a smart alec here but if dealers have to supply the car with a kiwi radio you know darn well the customers will end up paying.
What about people like me? I don't listen to the radio. Why should I pay for a feature I don't use.
keep in mind a radio is an optional extra.
Its not part of the functionality of the vehicle in most cases.
In japan just like here they could specify no radio or a fancy one with gps etc.

kazbanz, Feb 27, 4:36pm
Now--On this subject I would love to be talking to an actual a specialist audio auto sparky.
Yes I know there is no way the GPS could be got working here.
BUT --Im wondering if in fact we have been fed BS re the radios.
Jap radios only get to 90 FM -that's a given
BUT--HOW are they restricted?
Im wondering if theres simply a range limiter fitted to the jap stuff or if theres some simple part missing.

franc123, Feb 27, 5:08pm
Ooh its fun making certain comments on this subject, the dealers know damn well they're in the wrong, it gets a bite EVERY time, its an issue that could even be considered to be a CGA breach. Head units that can be replaced with proper local ones, fine, but these combined stereo and HVAC controller screen that cant be changed shouldn't be here. At the absolute minimum an English operating guide should be being supplied, its not something that your client should be just left with.

vtecintegra, Feb 27, 5:15pm
Why? So long as the buyer isn't mislead I don't see the issue.

Re: OP - I had the same thing happen on a late 90s Nissan with an early nav screen that also controlled the aircon and heater (interestingly not the stereo). The dealer spent ages sourcing the disk, but when it arrived it turned out the CD reader in the unit was dead anyway. Felt kinda sorry for the dealer as they genuinely did try (and because this was years ago they hadn't seen many of those system yet)

Kaz, can I ask whats the connection between 1/ power cut off, 2/ Stereo 3/ the windows not working from the drivers door?
The reason I ask is my son has recently bought an 04 fielder with the tv, sat nav, hdd, cd player etc and the annoying japanese voice when starting up.
He will swap it out in due course but the drivers side rear door dosent central lock or window doesnt work from drivers door.
Just wondering why there is a connection between stereo and doors?

kazbanz, Feb 27, 10:02pm
HOW are they in the wrong exactly? because YOU feel every car should come with a kiwi radio. or because you would rather the public drive around in 20 year old piles of cack? have a look at what 8k buys across the ditch at our nearest neighbour.
THEY have virtually no jap imports

kazbanz, Feb 27, 10:07pm
there is no DIRECT connection. but with Toyotas if you remove/disconnect the battery the ones with radio/satnav will need a reboot and the window default setting is to not work off the main switch,.
Theres a VERY simple reset for the window that's worth trying.
Put the window down to the bottom with the door switch--hold n the switch down 5 seconds. Take it to the top and again hold the switch up for 5 seconds. --this should fix the window.--if not then theres another issue

stevo2, Feb 27, 10:53pm
Thanks Kaz. Will email him those instructions, (he lives in Gisborne). Worth a crack

mharwood, May 23, 12:51pm
window reset same for mazda 3 not $380 to replace the controls
