To check transmission oil level, the car must be on level ground, gear selector in N or P and engine running. If it needs topping up, you'll need to fill it through the dipstick tube.

Do you not just add oil to the side of the box until it runs out? No wonder the car sounds like it is slipping clutch. The dipstick is empty. Bugger

Throught the dipstick? not through the top of transmission case?

If there is a tube there it is used for filling it and measuring the level, only fairly late model transmissions have top or in some cases side filler holes. Once you have filled it to the correct level with the right fluid then find out where the fluid is leaking from, trans levels don't drop for no reason.

I have never had to touch any transmission fluids in all the previous cars I have had

I check and service my ones regularly so me neither. If your one needs topping up then it's most likely leaking, which can happen. Most oil leaks occur by axle seals, transmission cooler hoses and if you are really unlucky, the front seal.
