Hi everybody, we're looking at buying a Toyota Wish 1800cc, but have noticed there are 2 types of engines around, a DOHC and a VVTi. What is the difference and are they chain driven or cambelt? What would be the better choice or does it not matter too much? Thanks :-)

There isn't a difference, the engine incorporates both features, it's just that some advertisers don't mention DOHC as virtually all petrol engines made jn the last 20 years and a substantial amount of diesels have it, it stands for Double OverHead Camshafts and Variable Valve Timing Injection, it just describes the valve operation and control in basic terms. Don't let the whole belt vs chain thing sway you too much, again this is part of valve control and there is for and against both systems, it just happens that chain has been back in vogue this century which allows for more compactness and design, reduced cost and less chance of outright failure and no ongoing service requirements, but contrary to popular belief does NOT mean the chain system won't require repair at some stage in the vehicles life. What you are looking at will be chain.

There are only TWO engines and transmissions in the Toyota wish. One is 1800 VVTI (which happens to also be dohc). The other is the 2.0l D4 The 1800VVTi is a darn good engine, Yes it is chain drive The D4 not so good. So 1800 is good 2000cc (2.0l) NOT good. Im sorry to say that some unscrupulous sellers deliberately avoid the D4
