Is engine temp up to normal?

Could be the thermostat as mentioned with engine temp (above)

Have you inadvertently pushed the button that switches off the overdrive?

They won't shift into top gear until they reach operating temperature, so if it is cold or thermostat/temp sensor faulty it won't shift. Also, seems obvious but make sure overdrive is switched on/switch is functioning

ahh to early in the morning to read propperly .i was scratching my head and rubbing my eyes thinking what a thermostat has to do with a fully mechanical transmission. Now top gear only could be what they state , a other thing it could be is your overdrive button working? i assume you have the od button on the gear stick?

John as previously mentions the obvious culprit is that it the overdrive is off. With a car of that age the OD bulb may be blown but button pushed IN is OD on and out is OD off.
