Am I missing something or is this an engine out/down job to replace the tensioner?

no idea but doubt it you should see the room i had to replace the clutch master on my vw lol

Unlikely, it may be a case of having to support the sump from underneath and remove the front engine mount in order to be able to jack the engine up or allow it to drop down to remove the bolts that hold it.

Looks like it needs to go down by about 100mm to clear the rail. Cant drop it that much as the oil filter will hit the subframe. Could remove the filter I guess but likely with that much drop that something else will foul.
Maybe drop the A/C compressor to give a bit of access/vision.
What ever way it looks a real pig of a thing for such a simple job. Will have a better look tomorrow. Factory manual simply says "remove".

Drop the frame it is. 100mm down or 200mm up or 50mm to the right so down sounds the simple way. Report back tomorrow - assuming I still have all my fingers!
