in what respect. mazda was never any good . just depends on what you call good. realistically its all crap if you compair it to what abuse a 4a-fe toyota could sustain. compaired to that.

Hell no they were a dreadful thing, even when newish. You don't really want to know about some of their habits, even many engine reconditioning firms did not want to repair them as the chance of them coming back was too high. The fundamental problem is it was effectively a petrol engine that was adapted to run on diesel and naturally more petrol like in its construction.

The B2500 WL motors are better. Just change the oil regularly as they are a diesel and the cambelt when due. The glow plugs will cause hard starting eventually, but are cheap. Buy genuine ones from the dealer as they last longer. I have had landrover defenders, landcruisers and hiluxes. Always found the mazda/ford utes more comfortable to drive and the engines cheaper to service.
We were using the Mazdas in 4WD and 2WD guises in a support role for Heavy trucking application with multiple drivers.
The toyotas blew head gaskets and the landrovers rolled over. The mazdas all got sold off at 350 000km. Still have 3 turbos left on the books.
The one B2200 was reliable but underpowered for hauling anything except people. Engine had rebuild at 500 000k. The engines do not like being cooked so replace keep an eye on the radiator hoses or you will need a new head. Delicate like an old hi-lux surf.
