Does a Mazda 323 have a cam belt or chain. It's a 2003 1.6 ltr

2003 did they still make a 323 then? To answer your question any propper mechanic would be able to tell . usually a plastic cover covers a cam belt . the one your selling? look where the yellow dipstick is belts pully is there a plastic cover down that side with bolts?

No plastic cover just belts over aircon and alternator, We were told when we brought it that it had a chain.

so the whole side of the engine looks solid aluminium no cover where the belts are the cover would go down behind the big crank pulley who drives all belts if it had a cover - no cover= chain . thats the engine number from carjam of your listing ZM 670125

this is a chain engine you can see the solid part below cover 5 https://i.ytimg.com/vi/Z7kX5VXU2po/hqdefault.jpg Also it would not surprise me Mazda change components of production of there vehicles ever 14 days probably buy all the crap other manufacturer dont use and use these parts to keep there production going and when they run out they use some other stuff they found somwhere .
