I believe the greenies don't want geo themal because it is considered polluting.

Modern geothermal typically features brine re injection and is considered to have minimal emissions. Some of the older stuff does suck, and involves heavy metals ending up in rivers etc.
Should note that many geothermal resources are being used at more than their sustainable rate (I.e. so much heat is being used that the resource is getting cooled). As such there is some debate if they should be classified as renewable. Personally I don't think that is a big issue. Most have 50+ years life left in them, and will warm back up (over several decades) if we stop using them.
