New Cars under $20K - options/suggestions!

Pity, for what its worth I do regularly see ex-demo's come up for the 20K mark. If it were me looking at the likes of the Picanto for budget reasons I would just spend 12K on a Fiat Grande Punto wit 40K on the clock, its still a better car and you are not paying through the nose for it.

Anyhow, it seems my posts are causing your thread to go astray so I will leave you to it. Best of luck.

The kia is a good buy. Excellent warranty. Popular choice.

tradingfreak360, Nov 23, 7:07pm
Goodluck with finding a nz new with full service records.

an 18 month old Yaris will be a much better option imho. cam chain engine (i think), and simply bomb proof

wasser61, Nov 23, 9:29pm
The Kia is a good choice, stick to what you feel comfortable with. Yes I have read that the local VW salesman here has been bombarding you with general sales crap. But the facts are that VW's in New Zealand are not cheap vehicles to own or service.
The Kia comes with a 5 year unlimited K's warrenty, and that is a bonus. Even I am looking at buying the Cerato Hatch. If I can only find a salesman with the same passion as Jazz.

why have you ruled out the Fiesta!
its a great car! youd get an ex demo or low K one in your budget.

I like them but my wife doesn't :-)

I recommend you buy a copy of the latest (November) Wheels magazine, they compared 10 small cars. Polo was top, with the 1.2 turbo engine, but they are much more competitively priced in Australia than here. The 1.4 Polo has a low powered, low spec engine. The interesting ones were Fiesta (3rd), Swift (4th) and new Kia Rio (5th). But the Rio had the 1.6 DI engine which you can't get here. They were not too impressed by the Micra, and the new Barina was 10th and last. New small cars in NZ under $20k tend to be the cheaply made stuff or real micro's like the Picanto, Myself I would go for better quality like a one year old Fiesta or Swift (new model), both of which should be available only slightly north of $20k. Either of thsee will be a lot more satisfying in the long run than the cheap stuff.

Nothing like buying new, you are the only one to have used it, if you keep for 10 years and if it's worth nothing in 10 years not allot each year in depreciation. Realistically you will loose about $16k over that period makes sense really.

kdcentralni, Nov 24, 2:40pm
also I'd got the KIA way as opposed to the Daiwoo built Holden spark or the Nissan, Micra and Picanto would be my picks if you have ruled out Suzuki.

db.price, Nov 24, 3:01pm
The Barina Spark is off the list - took it out yesterday with my wife and kids and we almost just drove it round the block and returned it - if we ddnt have to get my daughter to tennis probably would have! The spark had some distinctive style but just drove bad.Lots of engin noise too.

We would love a Swift but a look on TM last night showed us that a low km (so below 40000) small car that is only 2-3 years old has most of them somewhere around the $20K mark.o when you balance them out why wouldnt you buy a new car with a 5 yeat 100K warranty for the same price!

db.price, Nov 24, 3:03pm
We are a family that does not change out our cars often. If we buy new then we will hold onto it for 7-10 years. My wife has had her car for 10 years and done 90000km in it.

gemma165, Nov 24, 3:36pm
u could buy my toyota nadia for half quater that price and have a great holiday ! lol just throwing it out there

ringo2, Nov 24, 4:01pm
Stick with the Picanto.you both like it, the price is right so just buy it!

3tomany, Nov 24, 4:05pm
we drove the fiesta and a swift and a swift sport back to back and the swift was noisey uncomfortable and lacked features in comparison to the fiesta, the decision was easy

db.price, Nov 24, 7:05pm
As previously stated - I like the Fiesta but my wife doesn't - as it will be her car end of argument!:-)

I have to say I LOVED the Swift Sport and didnt find it noisy at all although the ride is harder than a Fiesta thanks to different shocks and suspension set up.The Fiesta has some great stuff like the Bluetooth but the voice controls I found gimmicky (and they didnt work for me).

db.price, Nov 24, 7:08pm
Just looked up the Nadia - have to say it is one UGLY poeple mover lol

gemma165, Nov 24, 8:02pm
HAHA i agree with u . hence why im selling :)

wasser61, Nov 24, 8:48pm

gemma165, Nov 24, 8:55pm
i know someone selling a holden statesman i think they are awesome cars too

db.price, Nov 26, 4:36pm
Hmmm the cat is amongst the pidgeons!

Took a Nissan Micra for drive yesterday and have to say it was pretty good - good deal too for a new Ti model - $20500 onroad.

Have now got us thinking.

Pluses:

It is a 1.5 engine
Climate AC
Bigger boot
Slightly more room in the back for people
Has Smart key - so don't need a key or remote to open the car or to start it

Negatives:

Styling inside and out not as nice
Back seat is hard as a rock (the kids were complaining!)
Fuel economy is 6.6l per 100km (compared to the 5.6 in the Kia)

Hmm more thinking and comparing required I think.

zetec, Nov 30, 5:38pm
In the "Wheels" magazine 10 small car test, they described the Micra "Old school hatch caught in a refinement time-warp", and placed it 9th, ahead of the new Barina though! BTW, the Barina Spark is not the same model as the just released Barina.

The Picanto would be a better choice, but if buying a new Kia, and keeping long term, the just released Rio would be even better - a little stretch on your budget, at $22,990 + ORC for the 1.4 6 spd manual (the auto is a bit gutless having tested one). Another to consider is the just released Yaris 1.3 5 door manual, at $23,790 + ORC, likely to have good residuals but a bit stingier in equipment levels than the Rio.

By the way, if buying new you can negotiate ORC costs down, they are a nice little margin enhancer for the dealer.

Check Kia , Hyundai and VW resale , they are all very poor and have been for some time. They are getting better thanks to a couple of good sellers but still poor vs other brands. I agree that Hyundai and Kia are doing well but dont get sucked in by the hype. Check the resale of i30.not flash. Resale is good on Yaris , Mazda 2 and Fiesta. All 5 star safety and all big brands.

RE VW Parts & reliability(Clark20 & DBPrice)We have 2 VW's a Passat, and a 2005 Golf, both are exceptionally reliable, and the golf has over 60K on the clock.NEver missed a beat, long service intervals, and although the services from the dealer seem expensive, they are 15,000 km apart, so cheap compared to their Japanese opponents - my company Toyota required a 10,000 service, thats 6 services in 60,000 Km, whereas the golf only required 4.

! I am the one who suggested VW
