yep got a Vy series II, the new ones(VE) are crap, almost like they are made in taiwan, and only assembled in aussie.

vtecintegra, Dec 10, 9:21am
I don't know what you're basing that on - Aussies Holdens have never been particularly well built but build quality certainly didn't go downhill between the VZ and VE

How often does the oil needs to be changed! We won't be using the car very much. Maybe 5000-8000 kms per year.

thunderbolt, Dec 10, 9:30am
15,000 km service intervals, but i would suggest once a year min.

thunderbolt, Dec 10, 9:31am
engine oil 15k, trans oil 90K

radha_giridhari, Dec 10, 9:43am
Thanks for the info

casper35, Dec 10, 8:06pm
I just got my trans flushed at oil changers was a lot cheaper.$154.00.

+1 fg is awesome ve is about as good as a bf and fg is way ahead of both

unbeatabull, Dec 10, 8:20pm
FG is by far better then the BA-BF Platform, they fixed a lot of problems like front balljoints etc that the BA-BF Platform suffered from.

As people above said Re: Service intervals, FG and BA-BF share the same intervals, 15,000km or once per year. At 90,000k they are due for Trans Service, Diff Oil and Fuel Filter replacement. $1000 for the trans service from a Ford Dealer wouldn't of been correct (I know, I work at one), it would of most likely included a full service including the Diff Oils, Fuel Filter etc as well. If you do get a 6 speed (MUCH better then the 4 and 5 speed options) the fluid is quite expensive and there is a certain process on bleeding/filling the trans that a cheaper place like Oil Changers might not know.

The VE is an excellent car , I can't see why most are ragging on it. How many have actually owned one! My Calais has a beautiful interior, and comfortable leather seats.

chris_051, Dec 10, 8:43pm
Not a fan of the VE interior and the 3.6s don't have the effortless torque of the 4.0, which is simply an awesome engine, before realizing it will return less than 8l/100km open road. Not that it means much in the real world, but the FG is 5 star ANCAP, both cars are safe family haulers, better than driving your kids around in some small shitboxes.

radha_giridhari, Dec 10, 10:31pm
Calasis definitely has better interiors then other holden models, also holdens have better shape then Fords. Having said that, Holdens don't drive as smooth as fords, we are looking for a family car and from the test drives, we have experienced Ford Falcon XR6's are more comfortable and has great interior.

make sure you let us know what you get

Have tried BF and FG - liked both. But the FG is brilliant. Handles execeptionally well on the open road. Wife liked the FG because the power steering on it at low speeds (supermarket carpark) was much much easier than the BF. BF power steering is quite heavier than FG. (gotta keep the wife happy eh)

That is a little pricey for that. A good transmission shop will do it for around $600. The ZF is a German transmission as used in Euro cars like Aston Martin and others and is very good but needs a bit of timely maintainance and is not really alot more expensive to service than any other. It could be expensive if not maintained though. As you say the pan needs to be replaced as the filter is built in. The parts and oil come from ZF Germany and the oil is not special Ford oil but it is special ZF trans fluid and has to be used. It should be done at about 90,000 to 100,000 ks.
I think the Falcon is a slightly better car but you should choose what you like. I don't think you can go wrong with the Falcon or the Commodore really. They are both good for the money.

radha_giridhari, Dec 10, 10:59pm
Will do

radha_giridhari, Dec 10, 11:00pm
Thanks jackson107, great info

If you're worried about depreciation the buying a 20 thousand dollar golden or Ford is about the single worst thing you can do.

In saying that, who cares! 99 percent of cats purchases are never going to be an investment.

radha_giridhari, Dec 11, 7:07am
Thanks nave12, Ford Falcon XR6 FG is our preference now ;)

rovercitroen, Dec 11, 7:24am
Chap I work worth has bought an FG Falcon XR6 and loves it. He speaks very highly about the ride, handling and refinement with lovely torquey engine. He has owned several high end Euros and says the Ford compares very favourably.

easygoer, Dec 11, 7:32am
Take the FG over the BF, also look at the BF Fairmont Ghia, I bought the Ghia for the superior trim options which includes the premium sound system, it has the same engine and sport suspension package as the XR6 but will most likely hold a better price due to the lower numbers of them on the road, I prefer a car that is a bit different to the masses on the road

gay-panda-guy, Dec 11, 7:51am
Had a VT now own a VE.enjoyed driving the most an XR6.only drive a Holden because it is sexier.not because it drives better than a Ford. Two family members have BA Falcons and we once owned a AU.personally I have always enjoyed the nicer ride of the Fords.my two Holden cars feel light.almost like I am handling a small car.

radha_giridhari, Dec 11, 9:16am
Thanks rovercitroen, we found ford xr6 very nice to drive

radha_giridhari, Dec 11, 9:20am
Thanks. How does it compare buying a car from reputed car dealer compare to private purchase! What are the benefits! What things to look out for if purchasing privately!

The trans fluid for the ZF6 is actually manufactured by Shell. ATF M-1375.4 and Ford just sell it under their OEM brand for alot more dosh. The ZF6 takes approx 10 litres and Ford charge around $90 per litre, where as a good transmission specialist will charge around $36 per litre for the same fluid. The BF2 and FG XR6's with the ZF6 came out with steel trans pans, which is a bonus, so you only have to get the filter kit with the pan gasket. The early BF ZF6 had the polycarbonate pan which cost around a grand from Ford as the filters form part of the pan.
