The main advantage for me buying private was the lower price I paid, the car cost me $22K against a car at the dealer at $30.5K, both were the same year, mileage and condition, the drawback can be less security with the purchase unless you do the appropriate checks, if something goes wrong with the vehicle from a private deal then you will most likely have no come back, this wasn't an issue for me as the car was only 3 years old with 36K on the clock

Thanks robbo36, excellent info, will keep that in mind. Cheers

radha_giridhari, Dec 11, 10:04am
Thanks easygoer, If we find anything interesting privately than will take it to ford dealer for pre-purchase inspection. Is there anything else I can do for the peace of mind!

easygoer, Dec 11, 10:11am
Make sure you check for any money owing on the vehicle, check registration history, if re registered it could indicate an insurance write off and subsequent rebuild, this may or may not be a problem but I for one would never knowingly buy a rebuilt car following accident damage, check for service history IE has it been maintained properly, the hand book has the service log in it, ensure you get both keys and remotes for the vehicle, they are expensive to buy apparently

Thank you very much.

for an inspection, i recommend autocare on rankin ave in new lynn. ask for phil, he's been our family mechanic for over 10 years and has a very good reputation

mopsy3, Dec 12, 2:44am
LOL at "Open mind". Is that tongue in cheek jazz!

mopsy3, Dec 12, 2:50am
Go anywhere else other than Ford dealer for trans service. Cant understand why trans places wouldnt want to do them. No problems.

robbo36, Dec 12, 8:12am
Yeah.nah! Keep away from those BA's especially painted in "Shockwave" as the original paint flaked off and they has to be repainted. Not sure how good the repaints are/were though. Also, BA's had some rust issues. Better to go for the BF or FG.

Sorry, that is Bullshit. Ford Charge out between $40-$50 a litre depending if its a lease company/retail customer etc, cost is around $30 a litre.

A service at Ford will cost $1k because not only is the trans and pan done, the diff oil, fuel filter, full service and throttle body cleaned, KAM Reset, and any other service expendables that are required (Brake Pads normally due around 90k Mark.)

A straight 6 speed trans fluid flush/change is $350-400 at a Ford Dealer.

robbo36, Dec 12, 9:43am
The trans fluid for the ZF6HP26 is actually manufactured by Shell. ATF M-1375.4 and Ford just sell it under their OEM brand for alot more dosh. The ZF6HP26 takes approx 7.5 litres and Ford charge around $90 per litre, where as a good transmission specialist will charge around $36 per litre for the same fluid. The BF2 and FG XR6's with the ZF6HP26 came out with steel trans pans, which is a bonus, so you only have to get the filter kit with the pan gasket. The early BF ZF6HP26 had the polycarbonate pan which cost around $1k from Ford as the filters form part of the pan.

Is Turners Auction safe to place to buy a car or is it better to pay a bit extra and buy it from a dealer! Also, if 2009 car is purchased from turners auction, will it still have 1 year of quarantee left!

vtecintegra, Dec 13, 6:02am
Some of the Aussie forums reckon the rust problems persisted through the BF and FG too. Would be worth giving the car a very thorough going over, especially the seams in the engine bay.

radha_giridhari, Dec 13, 6:09am
Turners are offering pre-purchase inspection for $150, is it worth it!

3tomany, Dec 13, 7:34am
no get a mechanic to look at it

robbo36, Dec 13, 7:38am
Don't be sorry, but that is not, quote "bullshit"! I own a BF XR6 and $90 per litre for the trans fluid is what the local Ford dealer quoted me. Mine has the steel pan.

unbeatabull, Dec 14, 2:58am
Can't be right. If it was an actual Ford Dealer it wouldn't of been that much. All Ford NZ Dealers in the country run the same pricing system, and I know for a fact that it's not $90/L. I'd be disputing that cost, cause it should not be that much.

darryl, Dec 14, 3:18am
Yep - they're not immune to FFR (Ford Factory Rust). Spoke to a guy in Aussies with several FG utes - all had rust starting on seams in the engine bay within 12 months.

Still a nice car though.

unbeatabull, Dec 14, 4:00am
Actually, to expand on my other post above, they do not take 7L of oil on a transflush. They normally take between 3.8-4.5~, they should not of charged you any more then 5L. It takes 7L from a dry fill, but that would involve the trans being out of the car, torque converter etc all drained as well.

radha_giridhari, Dec 14, 9:28am
Where abouts can I get Ford Pre Purchase inspection done please! Is it best to go to a Ford Dealer or VTNZ! Please suggest

unbeatabull, Dec 14, 6:08pm
Any trustworthy mechanic, best someone who has experience with those cars as they will know what to check on them

kwaka5, Dec 14, 6:41pm
Just bought a 2007 fairmont ghia. Same as an XR6 but with all the xtra nice bits. 136k for $17000. They are a good buy and mate has the previous model and commented on how much nicer the trans was and the fuel savings. Looked at an fg but was only going to get the base model for the same coin. Easy choice to make in the end. If you have the extra coin and can get the better speced FG then go for it.:)

buyme3, Dec 30, 7:37am
get a honda crv

yogibearz, Dec 30, 8:11am
just traded a bf xr6 for a near new fg xr6 and there is no comparison. The fg is much better in the handling department.
